I remember watching this over 15 years ago. I got lucky that my library had this in stock. Fantastic movie. Probably one of the best films depicting the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. Amazing how they fought longer than the Polish and French army during World War 2.I highly recommend this movie if your fascinated with that time period and events.

The biggest gap or omission in most histories of the Second World War is what happened in Poland. By the end of the war the country had lost not only a fifth of its population, but also its freedom, despite having fought from the first day to t he last against the Germans. Many histories deal with the greatest crime of the war years: the annihilation of the European Jews and which chiefly took place in Poland. But these are books about the Holocaust-- not about Poland. This film is an attempt to describe the impact of the Polish occupation on a people in which the oppression by the Nazis was so intolerable that it created a widespread national hatred that drove the population as a nation into action.
Although many historians agree that the decision to initiate the Warsaw Uprising was a tragic mistake, what was even more tragic were the bargaining negotiations at Teheran in 1943 and which were formalized at the Yalta Conference in Feb. 1945 where the three major world leaders, Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin took up the future of the Polish government. It was at those two conferences that the Soviet-sponsored Polish faction in Poland and who the Russians recognized as the "provisional government" of Poland which was later granted moral legitimacy to Russia what they had earlier acquired by sheer force: Russian domination not only of Poland, but practically all of Eastern Europe.

This is an incredibly powerful story based on real people and real history. Remember this first came out on TV and was shown over two nights so half way through the story it ends and then the second part begins so you have to remember it's in two parts and not stop watching when the first part ends, which is in the middle of the story, keep watching and then the second part will begin. I'm really glad I watched this. This is history and human courage that must never be forgotten.

I have watched this movie twice, and I think it is very powerful. It may not be the best made film I have seen, but still it is one I am bound to remember. The director of "Uprising" has made a film that touches your heart. After a while you really feel you have learnt to know some of the main characters, and it is easy to feel their pain.

As a viewer you end up with an enormous respect for these young people, and it was very painful to watch how some of their hopes and dreams didn't come true: They hoped that the allied would help them, and they sent a courier to London, but no help came. They hoped that someone was going to bomb the railway lines to the death camps and in that way halt the mass murder of thousands of innocent human beings. But it didn't happen. (I remember reading somewhere that Stalin was against this idea, because he wanted the railway lines intact when he was going to invade Poland.)
The Ghetto fighters received some weapons from the Polish underground, but far too little to continue to fight. Still, these young men and women managed to hold out against the Nazis for a longer time that the entire Polish army.

And for Adolf Hitler; a Jew free Warsaw was going to be Himmler's birthday present to "the fürer", but instead around 500 young men and women gave him a very different kind of birthday treat.

Uprising is a great movie to watch if you have or have not read any of the books on the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. It seems to follow the Kazik book and is a little long but worth the time. I started watching it and eventually my whole family ended up in the living room watching it with me. My daughter has been studying the Ghetto Uprising so she knew as much as I did but my husband and son got alot of information from the film that they knew nothing about. It has a great cast. Big name stars and filmed really well. I would recommend this film to anyone.

I recently finished reading Conversations with Executioner which is Jurgen Stroop's account of what happened in the ghetto. The first half of the movie very well shows the living conditions in the ghetto and the brutality of the germans. Also the building of the wall around the ghetto and ways to sneak out were very realistic. Donald Suterland's acting is great, and he very well portrais the role of head of jewish council. Hank Azaria's acting was wonderful he really brought the character of Mordechai Anielewicz to life and in contrast David Schwimmer's performace was posibly worst I seen of him so far, he looked the part but with hard to place accent which faded in and out and lack of realism he should have been replaced with someone else. The movie takes a turn for the worse in the second half when the actual uprising starts. I was surprised that there was very little mention of the Polish Underground Army which has helped the jews in the ghetto in many ways from supplying weapons to supplying food and building materials for the bunkers. Overall the entire fighting seemed too claen and too orderly. There are repeated scenes and unrealistic scenes of battle. Also in his report and his confessions in prison Stroop never mentioned using gas in the ghetto. Most german attacks are shown as disorganized and chaotic, they were like that before Stroop took over the command, at which point he had very well organized attacks especially with flame throwers and large caliber anti-aircraft guns. Also at the time in Poland from a builders stand point houses were built out of red brick some from concrete and all had red clay shingles roofing, during the fighting you can see that the houses which are being destroyed are made from wood and drywall and roofs are covered in modern asphalt shingles. All those small details build up and take away from the big picture.

In conclusion this is a good movie however Andrzej Wajda made a better one. I suggest seeing both.

5.0 out of 5 stars Epica rievocazione della rivolta del ghetto di Varsavia
Reviewed in Italy on December 31, 2012

As someone with a keen interest in World War II (in particular the Jewish holocaust and the inexplicable evils carried out by the Nazi party) I was stunned by what I came across in this almost unheard of film in one of my random Amazon searches.

Uprising tells a true and tragic tale of the Jewish uprising in the Warsaw Ghetto. Although not one hundred percent factually accurate, the story is true in essence.
Voight, Sutherland and Schwimmer act their respective parts superbly, capturing the heartache and misfortune of the oppressed Jews during this unforgettable era.

Whilst not quite up their with the likes of Schindler's List and The Pianist, Uprising manages to educate and entertain simultaneously.

The spirit of the Jews as they fought back against the evil oppressors is portrayed exceptionally well; and Uprising is not one to miss.

Highly recommended.
