Community-Engaged Learning
As Nebraska’s only public, four-year urban metropolitan university, the University of Nebraska at Omaha is directly and personally connected with the success of our community. Our student-focused mission is dedicated to creating the space where academic excellence meets community engaged service. This is demonstrated by the more than 240 classes each year that connect over 3,300 Mavericks with hands-on service projects in courses that combine the lessons from their classroom and directly apply them to situations that help make a real impact. UNO creates change-makers who understand the real-world value of the knowledge and experiences that an education can give.
UNO is also proud to be the home of the Barbara Weitz Community Engagement Center, which houses 23 community partners, as well as UNO’s Office of Engagement, which oversees and facilitates service projects with over 1,200 community partners nationwide.
Scholarships and Financial Aid
Your journey is important to you, and UNO is here to support and guide your path. With hundreds of scholarships available to first year and returning students, every Maverick can have the chance to thrive. At UNO, we understand the challenges many students face first-hand, and are prepared to support all learners. Nearly 40% of our student body are first-generation, and 69% of undergraduates receive some form of financial aid.
Students who enrolled at UNO as first-time students and earned a bachelor’s degree in 2020-2021 borrowed just $21,419 on average, below the national average of $31K borrowed by public university students. UNO’s mission is student-focused, and we are committed to making sure that Mavericks have the resources they need to complete their educational journey.
On top of being one of the most affordable four-year institutions in Nebraska, as a member of the University of Nebraska System, UNO has ambitious plans in three key areas:
- A relentless focus on student access and success
- Enhancing faculty, academic, and clinical excellence
- Transformational research and innovation
No matter where you start in your journey, we will help you achieve your goals.
A Place Where Opportunity is Made
The hands-on, experiential learning focus at UNO helps connect students with chances to build and strengthen their professional and personal growth. The relationships that develop between student and community organizations through service-learning opportunities create lasting networks that can lead to greater opportunities in their future.
In addition to the wealth of service and engagement opportunities within the community, UNO has also worked to develop and deepen relationships with Nebraska’s business community so that we can offer more paid internship opportunities to students than ever before. Through initiatives like UNO’s Career Connect, there is a vast network of more than 100 business partners who have committed to offering paid internship opportunities. That means that even while still in the classroom, our students gain first-hand industry knowledge on their feet which they can immediately add to resumes. It has been shown time and again that these internships quite often lead to full-time employment opportunities for the students involved. Students play an active role in strengthening their own economic and social mobility.
UNO is a place where all are welcome, and all can thrive.
