University of Kansas Law School Overview

The School of Law at University of Kansas has an application deadline of March 1. The full-time program application fee at the School of Law at University of Kansas is $55. Its tuition is full-time: $23,402 (in-state) and full-time: $29,753 (out-of-state). The student-faculty ratio is 7.9:1.

The University of Kansas School of Law is a public institution on the university’s main campus in Lawrence. The law school offers a variety of ways for students to hone legal skills in specific areas, whether through concentrations—including media, law, and technology; tribal law; and business and commercial law—or through more than 10 clinics, which train students to counsel clients about elder law, criminal prosecution, and more.

Students interested in earning a joint degree have many options to do so through other departments of the University of Kansas. For instance, a law student could pursue a joint J.D./M.B.A through the KU School of Business, a J.D./Master of Science in Journalism through the KU William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications, or a J.D./Master of East Asian Languages and Cultures through the KU College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

The KU School of Law operates a variety of centers, including the Center for International Trade and Agriculture; the Tribal Law and Government Center; and the Shook, Hardy, and Bacon Center for Excellence in Advocacy. It is also home to two student-edited journals, the Kansas Law Review and the Kansas Journal of Law and Public Policy. Students seeking an experience outside of Lawrence have several study abroad options to consider, including a semester in London and summers in either Cambridge, England, Istanbul, or Ireland.

From the School

A law school where value matters.

At KU Law, we don't define value in traditional terms. Instead, we ask what we can give our students that will help them succeed anywhere they imagine.

We equip our students with the deep knowledge and practice-ready skills to achieve their goals. With programs in areas as diverse as corporate law, international law, public interest law and others, Jayhawk lawyers have been exploring new horizons near and far for more than 140 years.

Great Value

KU Law takes pride in its ability to offer a world-class legal education at a reasonable rate of tuition. The school is consistently ranked as one of the best value law schools nationally. Our students graduate with an average debt burden far below other law schools.

Degree Programs

The Juris Doctor (J.D.) program at KU Law prepares students to be outstanding members of the legal profession, with a commitment to public service and professional achievement. Students can chart their course from more than 100 upper-level courses, eight certificates and more than a dozen curriculum guides.

In addition to the three-year J.D. program, KU Law offers three graduate programs for international students. The school's location at a major research university supports 10 joint degree programs. KU Law also offers a master's degree and a graduate certificate in Homeland Security: Law & Policy.

Hands on Learning

KU Law’s experiential learning program includes a mix of live-client clinics, field placements and skills simulations. Students can participate in moot court, mock trial, transactional competitions, student-edited journals and pro bono service. Additionally, students in in our 6th Semester in Washington, D.C. Program spend the spring semester living, learning, working and connecting in our nation’s capital.

Small Class Sizes

More than 75% of upper-level classes have 25 or fewer students. First-year students take half their classes in small sections. Those small working groups allow for personal interaction with professors and an informal learning environment that encourages in-depth discussion and critical analysis.

One-to-One Career Planning

The Career Services Office takes an intensive one-to-one approach, developing a career strategy unique to each student. Graduates consistently land jobs with law firms, government agencies, corporations and nonprofits.

Free Bar Prep

Bar prep is expensive. KU Law has you covered. KU Law's Bar Prep Program offers all students a free, post-graduation bar prep course and a Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam prep course.

Student Support

At KU Law, we are committed to the success and well-being of all our students. Resources include academic support programs, need-based scholarships, one-to-one faculty advising and alumni mentoring. Students have access to stipends for public interest work, travel to interviews and professional attire.
