The University of London is a federal research university that is cloistered and located in London, England.
The university is one of three (3) institutions that can lay claim to being the third (3rd) oldest university in England because it was first established by royal license in the year 1836.

The University of Westminster’s ten (10) largest colleges are King’s College London, University College London, Queen Mary, City, Birkbeck, the London School of Economics and Political Science, Royal Holloway, Goldsmiths, SOAS, and St George’s.

In order to compete with the religious colleges of Oxford and Cambridge, University College London was established in 1826 as “London University” under a secular name.
King’s College London (KCL) was founded in response to theological dispute surrounding such educational institutions and was the first to be given a royal charter in 1829.
UCL, which had previously received a royal charter, reapplied for a royal charter as a university in the year 1834 (after having already done so in the year 1830), giving it the authority to grant degrees.
The London medical schools in response became more hostile to “exclusive” rights. In the medical press, there was discussion over the idea of a general degree awarding body for the schools. The Select Committee on Medical Education also took testimony.
However, renewed pressure on the government to give degree-awarding authority to a body that would not apply religious tests resulted from the blocking of a bill to open up Oxford and Cambridge degrees to dissenters. This pressure was primarily due to the fact that the new University of Durham’s degrees were also planned to be closed to non-Anglicans.
The 1836 and 1837 charters established the university as an examination body with the authority to grant degrees in the humanities, law, and medicine.
Even though the university lacked the power to confer theological degrees, it gave the other three (3) English universities’ senior professors due consideration. In medicine, the authority to choose which medical schools offered adequate training was granted to the university.
By distinction, it would test students from University College London, King’s College, or any other institution having a royal warrant in the fields of the arts and law, effectively giving the government authority over which schools might collaborate with the university.
There was no other connection between the connected colleges and the university outside the ability to submit pupils for examination.
After the graduates, who had previously gotten their degrees without a ceremony, appealed to the Senate, the institution held its first graduation ceremony at Somerset House in 1849.

University of London Admissions
