Federal Cross of Merit for Prof Karin Birkner

Prof. Dr Karin Birkner was awarded the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. She has held the Chair of German Linguistics at the University of Bayreuth since 2008 and has also been Deputy University Women's Representative since 2018.

When a tree is surrounded by many similar individuals, its mortality increases, which is probably caused by specialised pathogens or herbivores. This effect occurs in forests all over the world, but is more pronounced in rare tropical tree species, which could contribute to the astonishing tree species diversity of tropical forests.

Global climate databases work with incorrect data for the tropics

Accurate climate data is immensely important for climate change predictions and modeling. Using a unique climate data set of 170 stations, mainly from the mountains of Tanzania including Kilimanjaro, Dr. Andreas Hemp, researcher at the Chair of Plant Systematics at the University of Bayreuth, shows that the commonly used data sets are inaccurate.
