Regents approve UTSA, UT Health San Antonio exploration of new public health school
NOVEMBER 18, 2021 — The University of Texas System Board of Regents approved plans today for a new collaboration between UTSA and UT Health Science Center San Antonio. The project, the UT School of Public Health San Antonio, would support the UT System in San Antonio as the established public health leader and community partner in South Texas.
“UTSA and UT Health San Antonio are urban serving universities that are deeply committed to meeting the unique health needs of South Texas’ diverse population,” said UTSA President Taylor Eighmy. “This new School of Public Health will be a gamechanger in preparing our region’s next generation of public health leaders and advancing transdisciplinary research solutions that create healthier communities.”
UTSA and UT Health San Antonio are dedicated to meeting the strong demand for public health education in San Antonio, developing the next generation of public health professionals and preparing them to succeed in the COVID-19 era. The two UT System institutions are federally designated Hispanic Serving Institutions with the knowledge and expertise to meet the unique health needs of the region’s diverse population.
The new public health school will build upon UTSA and UT Health San Antonio’s combined expertise in such areas as data science, epidemiology and biostatistics, behavioral science, finance and business administration, and implementation science. The venture will prioritize the health care needs of a 38-county region that includes several urban markets and majority-minority cities, and a number of communities that the U.S. Health and Resources Administration has identified as underserved rural areas.
The new School of Public Health will offer a Master of Public Health degree beginning in 2024. The first doctoral students would be admitted in 2025. The institutions would seek approvals from the Board of Regents and the THECB as they develop future doctoral programs within the school.
