El 4 de octubre de 1946 fue fundada la Universidad Católica de Santo Tomás de Villanueva, convirtiéndose así en la primera universidad privada que se abrió en Cuba. Fundada por los Padres Agustinos, la Universidad creció rápidamente hasta que fue clausurada tras la llegada del comunismo al país. En el exilio, los Padres Agustinos fundaron St. Thomas University en el Sur de la Florida, donde se mantiene la tradición educacional católica que comenzó en Cuba hace siete décadas.



Catholic University of Saint Thomas of Villanova: 70 Years of Education and Faith

The Catholic University of Saint Thomas of Villanova was opened on October 4, 1946, becoming the first private university to be opened in Cuba. Founded by the Augustinian friars, the University grew rapidly until it was closed following the arrival of communism to the country. In exile, the Augustinian friars founded St. Thomas University in South Florida, where the Catholic educational tradition that began in Cuba seven decades ago remains alive.
