While Under the Banner of Heaven gets bogged down by an overabundance of backstory, its procedural through-line is enriched by a thoughtful introspection on personal faith.

James P Great show. Thrilling till the end and first time I’ve seen Garfield outside of Spiderman, he was really great! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/14/24 Full Review Dave C The costumes, settings, narrative, and the tone set in the writing all make this something absorbing and masterful as a slice of history told with the help of artistic license, as well as a considered duality to the presentation of both Church and secular understanding of fundamental Mormonism. The slow-moving and deliberate nature to the unfolding of events allow more time to bear the psychological and emotional states of all key characters. Their changes, fractures, imperfections, blind faith, misguided loyalty, daily struggles, relationships, intimate contemplation, and many other human traits are all a part of what happens, and how such brutality came to be. The lead performers work so well together, the tension and suspense are thoroughly believable. Engrossing, if a tad hard going at times, it is a brilliant limited series Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/10/24 Full Review Tyler G A slow-at-times procedural crime investigation among fundamentalist Mormons with a disjointed timeline. I liked the slicing in of Mormon history scenes, some from the Church's version and some from secular perspectives. Garfield is good and depicts beginning to question faith well. It probably could have been 5 episodes instead of two. The family story resolution is so underwhelming it is packed into the final couple minutes. The conclusions are predictable from early episodes, so it is more character exploration than mystery. Pretty good but not great. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/30/23 Full Review Francisco F Excelente serie. Totalmente intrigante y con un guion, actuación y trama completamente envolventes. Recomendada. La actuación de Andrew Garfield es impecable. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/29/23 Full Review Gareth v A slow burn police investigation series that delves into faith, family & morality. While this a compelling series, it is a tad bloated and towards it's conclusion becomes overly philosophical in regards to religion. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/16/23 Full Review Levi H Great mystery with great characters. Glad I watched it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/14/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Andrew Male Times (UK) Where the series falls down, however, is in its need to include a series of am-dram historical reenactments about Mormonism’s origins. Aug 12, 2022 Full Review James White Empire Magazine Garfield is the beating heart of the show, but the entire ensemble breaks out of expected roles to place Under The Banner Of Heaven among the best miniseries of the year. Rated: 4/5 Jul 28, 2022 Full Review Michael Hogan Daily Telegraph (UK) Ultimately, this has the sheen of prestige TV without ever quite delivering. Rated: 3/5 Jul 27, 2022 Full Review Ilan Preskovsky Channel24 (South Africa) If the parallels between Joseph Smith and modern-day Mormonism don't always convince, the way the series so beautifully portrays the connection between the spiritual struggles of Brenda Lafferty and those of Jeb Pyre is beyond reproach. Rated: 4.5/5 Aug 31, 2023 Full Review Martin Carr Yahoo! Movies Under the Banner of Heaven is a true crime drama for those who like their murder mysteries leaning towards religion. May 20, 2023 Full Review Prahlad Srihari Firstpost Within a true-crime framework, Under the Banner of Heaven highlights the dangerously thin line between scriptural literalism and messianic delusions.
