The Ultimate Collection - Start The Party Again 1963-1968") überdeutlich.

Fantastischer Stereo-Klang. Das australische Label "RAVEN" beweist hier erneut, wie schon bei "Esther Phillips The KUDU Years 1971-1977", RVCD-174 (siehe meine Rezension), dass man sich dort nicht mit nur mittelmäßigem Klang zufrieden gibt.
Kauftipp:

November 2005
Lesley Gore was, one month after her 17th birthday, when she was sitting at #1 in the US and Australia and #9 in the UK with her debut single, the monster million-selling "It’s My Party". A steady stream of crisp and indelible hits followed – "Judy’s Turn To Cry", "She’s A Fool", "You Don’t Own Me", "That’s The Way Boys Are", "Maybe I Know" and "Sunshine Lollipops & Rainbows" – all included here. Long considered the best single-disc Gore anthology on the market, Raven’s START THE PARTY AGAIN has been refreshed, refurbished and re-energised for a new century, with the addition of two new tracks (to a total of 32), superb enhanced quality audio, a new array of fetching images and historical notes. With all her key hits, some quite superb album cuts and even three tracks sung in German this is the gist of Gore, an absolutely essential addition to the collection of anyone who relishes a great pop song.

All the hits here but would have replaced her foreign tracks with some other great Mercury sides. Her career is a little under-rated.

One of the better Lesley Gore collections, with 32 songs.
Rezension aus den Vereinigten Staaten vom 1. November 2015
Raven is one of the best of the reissue labels so I wanted to try their new Lesley Gore Ultimate Collection and with 32 tracks, pick up a few extra songs. i already had the excellent 20-song "Best of" CD with the blue cover by Rhino which has all the hits. Either one would please any Leslie Gore fan though the Rhino disc is now out of print and thus sometimes goes for high prices.
Leslie appeared in 1963, part of that year's burgeoning "Girl Group sound" if you are willing to expand that definition a bit to go beyond the R&B groups to be a more inclusive "Girl Sound" that included lesley, Robin Ward, Marcie Blane, Shirley Ellis, Timi Yuro and Joanie Sommers. But unlike them, Lesley was very assertive, not just wanting to be Bobby's Girl but crying defiantly at her own birthday party, then providing her own answer song with the in-your-face celebratory Judy's Turn To Cry. In early 1964 as the full tidal wave of Beatlemania and the British Invasion hit, she'd be #2 for three weeks with the amazingly independent You Don't Own Me (which was only #2 because of The Beatles' I Want to Hold Your Hand).
The British Invasion was a once in a lifetime force that almost completely washed away the old music scene overnight. Virtually everyone who had been big before 1964 was gone completely. Only a handfull, mostly of the newer stars, survived, ones like Lesley, Gene Pitney, The Four Seasons, Jan & Dean and The Beach Boys. But except for The Beach Boys, each of the others managed to have one final big hit or two in 1964 and then continue in a diminished way with songs that made the top twenty but rarely if ever the top ten. This was the pattern that Lesley followed until her final hit, 1967's California Nights which peaked at #16. It seems it was just time for a change. It's not like the charts were overwhelmed by British artists: from early '64 to early '66 there were only twelve to fifteen British artists who made the upper end of the charts, and some of them, like Cilla Black, turned out to be one hit wonders in the States. It seemed to just be a change in the air; in 1964 there was still a Girl Group sound, but all of the girl groups were different (The Girlfriends, Dixie Cups, Shangri-Las, etc.).
But it didn't matter if you were a fan of Lesley, and though her songs weren't top of the chart hits, they often got close to the top ten, receiving lots of airplay and were marked by being uniformly good. In fact, Lesley Gore's songs were always quite creative and after the first two, never sounded like each other. Mostly written by good New York pop composers including Brill Building people like Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich, Carol sager, Marvin Hamlisch, Mark Barkan and Bob Crewe. They all had top notch arrangements and sound great on the disc. They ran a gamut of moods from the minor key moodiness of You Don't Own Me to the uninhibited celebration of Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows. California Nights is a standout with its double-tracked vocal, waves, oboe and chorus. This is just one of several really good Lesley Gore collections, so take your pick, but I can guarantee that in terms of sound and booklet, plus its 32 tracks, this is one of the best.
PLEASE NOTE: Lesley recorded Sunshine, Lollipops & Rainbows early on, in 1963, as it was written by her rehearsal pianist, Marvin Hamlisch. Then, in 1965, it was re-recorded with a new arrangement for use in the Ski-Party film, in which Lesley appeared singing the song on a bus. For some reason Raven used the early version here rather than the single, which would be more typical. This is an odd choice because most fans will want the single version. Since Raven decided to do this, they should have included the 1965 single version as a bonus track but didn't. This doesn't ruin the disc but is a bit of an oversight.
