- Darcy LLeamington Spa, United Kingdom37 contributionsBrilliant MuseumThis museum is brilliant. We couldn’t believe it was free! The exhibits are varied and extensive. We were particularly impressed by the exhibit focusing on The Troubles. I would definitely recommend a visit if you’re looking for something interesting and free to do in BelfastVisited May 2023Traveled with familyWritten June 1, 2023
- HAH20072015Herefordshire, United Kingdom25 contributionsVery interesting museumExcellent museum which fronts the botanic gardens. Good example of how a museum can be updated to make it more interesting to young audiences. Very good section devoted to the Troubles. Splendid basketry dragons hang over the central concourse. Also great to see examples of contemporary work. Nice big airy cafe.Visited May 2023Traveled with friendsWritten June 2, 2023
- CharlieV2011Chicago, Illinois1,630 contributionsGreat History MuseumThis museum is a great way to spend an hour or two learning about the history of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The museum is free, but there is a suggested donation at the entrance. The museum starts with genetics, followed by the Ice Age and the various patterns of temperature change that impacted Ireland. Followed by the Ice Age, you will see exhibits that go into present day that include the troubles, Spanish armada, COVID, world wars, and a limited amount of pop culture. I had a great experience learning about history!Visited July 2023Traveled soloWritten July 16, 2023
- tripsandfood55London, United Kingdom3,927 contributionsA visit to see The Druthaibs BallFree to visit and no booking is necessary. We visited in April 2023, hoping to see the Game of Thrones (last season update) tapestry, to find it currently on tour, so look forward to it's return in the future to re-visit the museum again. During our trip this time, we were pleased to find the Array Collective - The Druthaibs Ball, which won the 2021 Turner Prize. Worth visiting and viewing the installation and we enjoyed our free Northern and Southern Tayto crisps that the museum team left on the tables for people to eat. A nice touch!Visited April 2023Written July 18, 2023
- hillfieldjpGloucester, United Kingdom237 contributionsBrilliant museumThis is a really good museum, well laid out with plenty to look at. We spent over 2 hours looking around and didn’t have time to see it all. The Troubles exhibition was very good and informative. We also liked the fashion photography exhibition from the National Portrait Gallery. The museum was busy with plenty of activities for children. This is definitely worth visiting to when also spending time in the Botanic Gardens. The cafe was good and had a nice range of snacks for lunch.Visited July 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 21, 2023
- stevnKilkenny, Ireland117 contributionsExcellent and insightfulWe visited this Museum on recommendation by a friend and we were blown away by all that you can see, I've seen a lot of attractions in Belfast most I had to pay a fortune for but this was for free and it was my favourite of them all. Walking in the entrance we were greeted with a smile and a warm welcome it was great. There's so much to see it will take you an hour or more and is worth your time. I highly recommend it.Visited July 2023Traveled with familyWritten July 30, 2023
- Cas E2 contributionsA modern underrated museumBrilliant under rated museum. Free in. Great variation in exhibits. Kept a 6 and 12 year old engaged. You need about 4 hours to do the whole place. A gem of a modern and interesting museum.Visited August 2023Traveled with familyWritten August 3, 2023
- Shannon MLarbert, United Kingdom18 contributionsGood funGreat free day out. My partner and I came here before heading for the airport. Good way to kill a few hours. Lots to learn and see. Plenty of things to touch as well. Good for kids with sensory needs. Would recommend for all ages above 4.Visited August 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten August 12, 2023
- BirtwistlerNantwich, United Kingdom85 contributionsStunningly goodWe used the bus tour to get us out to the museum, handy as it's quite a way out from the city centre. The museum is amazing, so much to see. As we came in a member of staff suggested we started at the top and worked our way down and this was great. We spiralled down the museum and took in as much as we could, but there's so much, it was information overload in the end. Well worth the visit and as it was free, the price point was a welcome relief from the rest of our visit! Use the lockers to dump your stuff if, like us you have rucksacks etc. They're only £1 (non-refundable, but it's a charity). Quite small, but we got our two in-flight rucksacks in easily. Your back will thank you.Visited August 2023Written August 16, 2023
- HeinBloedLindenfels, Germany14,448 contributionsA nice alternative when outside is wetDue to heavy rain, we asked our private tour guide for a dryer alternative but walking through the TITANIC Quarter. She selected the Ulster Museum and could show us a wide variation that influenced life in Northern Ireland. A place you could learn a lot. We stayed here for a coffee at the end of the tour.Visited July 2023Traveled with friendsWritten August 17, 2023

This is a really well done museum, covering a huge range of subject matter in an informative but never dull manner.
Due to current Covid restrictions, and booking the day before, we were only able to get entry from 3.30pm which limited the amount we were able to see. We chose the history and nature routes. The history area covers Irish, and specifically northern Irish, history from prehistoric times right through to the Troubles and the present day and complemented the escorted tours about the Troubles that we did earlier in our visit to Belfast. The natural history section is very eclectic and the selection of rocks, animals etc on display are well grouped and interestingly presented. The Elements gallery area is particularly good and quite “different”.
There is a small but good gift shop and a cafe which we didn’t use. Hopefully we will return one day to see the Art collection!

My wife and I spent a day in this beautiful museum.
The exhibits were informative and covered a very wide variety of topics.
The “Troubles” exhibit is enlightening, provocative, poignant, disturbing and moving. I had to collect myself through this exhibit and think about how fragile and hard won freedom is.
The cafe on the ground floor is excellent and serves a wide variety of very tasty sandwiches, salads and desserts. Staff is pleasant and eager to please.

This is a very good museum, and given that it’s free, it’s definitely worth visiting!
Staff were nice and helpful and it was all COVID-safe. My only issue was that now that the museum is one-way, everyone must start with The Troubles exhibition which is the most recent in time, and then work backwards through time to the dinosaurs etc. Reading the information in this order was quite confusing for me as it seems like the museum has been designed to be experienced in the opposite order (chronologically).
I booked my tickets online beforehand but you may be able to get away with turning up and paying for tickets on the door.

My family and I visited in a Sat afternoon having booked easily beforehand for free on the website, you get a 30 minute window for your arrival. Friendly staff and a one way system which is so easy to follow. You don’t need to queue if you have prebooked. Some incredible things to see here including an actual Egyptian mummy! I think you would need a whole day to see around all the floors, we will definitely be back!

We love the museum. No matter how often we visit, it's always an interest. I've been bringing my children since they were 2 and as they've grown thrive found new interests in the museum, and I also derive a great deal of enjoyment from our visits.

We enjoyed visiting this museum and although we didn’t explore everything it covered The Troubles which was something we wanted to learn more about. A balanced exhibition covering key events.
Other things we visited was the 1920s fashion (only a small room on the top floor). More impressive was the exhibition on La Girona which was a boat from the Spanish Armada that sunk off of Giants Causeway. It was interesting reading about this and also seeing a coin depicting Mary I and Philip II of Spain.
The museum is free to enter and also has a cafe on the ground floor. We had a snack and tea. It has easy bus links to the centre of Belfast and we’d recommend especially if you have a rainy afternoon!

The Ulster museum is situated in the Botanic Gardens. It’s around half a mile from Botanic station on foot.
You currently need to book a ticket to gain admission. I was fortunate to get a slot at 3.30 on a Wednesday afternoon leaving me 90 minutes for viewing.
La Belle Époque showed fashions from the late 19th and early 20th centuries and was quite interesting.
I preferred the exhibition of Willie Doherty photography over the years, especially those documenting borders in Derry and more recently between USA and Mexico.
I enjoyed the information about the Spanish Armada and those who were shipwrecked on the west coast of Ireland.
The displays about the ‘Troubles’ were most enlightening and unbiased. This was arguably the highlight of the museum.
There were also displays of ceramics and other decorative arts but I didn’t have time to see these in any detail.

Booking system showed they were sold out but at 11 30am they had space for walk ins.
Really great lay out with some very informative exhibitions. Can't believe it's all donation based!
It has a lot of content and takes hours to get around it all so we had achey feet by the end. We would have loved a drink in the cafe after but it was very loud, a bit like a creche, so we gave it a miss. That's the only reason it's not 5*.

Went to view the history and art displays but found other displays well worth a visit - the exhibition on costume/fashion was very informative and interesting. Staff were . knowledgeable. I am slightly disabled so I appreciated the care and helpfulness they showed. Very good café, the wheaten (brown) bread was particularly good!

This is a superb resource for the city. Situated in attractive botanic parkland and close to the prestigious Queen's University, the museum houses an impressive art collection and many historical and prehistorical artefacts. Suspended from the ceiling above the atrium are spectacularly lifelike wickerwork dragons, inspired by Game of Thrones. It's well worth a leisurely visit (admission is free!). There is an excellent café/restaurant with a varied menu, and the ornate palm house and the tropical glasshouse are not to be missed.

What is the minimum amount of time I would need to see the Museum? We only have an hour and a half and don't want to waste time if it would not be worthwhile. Thanks for your input.
