Escape with this surreal, low-energy junkie road trip
mjbrown6 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Tyger Tyger treads much the same ground as every other drug-fueled road movie you can think of, yet manages to steer clear of most clichés...well, except for a couple of big ones: the "was this all in her head?" question posed by the end, and the fact that every character they run into is an over-the-top archetype.

You could compare it to David Lynch's work, meaning there's not really much of a coherent narrative, transformation of characters, or poignant commentary, so much as just dreamlike mood-setting and forcing the viewer to experience the protagonists' state of mind, in which both sobriety and comprehension of what is going on at any given moment are always just slightly out of reach.

Unlike the many films it reminds me of, though, the dramatic intensity and manic energy is dialed way back, and it's kind of a relief. Tense moments one would expect to end in tragedy just kind of fall apart and you're whisked along to the next adventure. The most "druggy" moments never turn grotesque or disturbing, and nobody dies. Questions about the main characters, the pandemic, and the "meds" mostly remain unanswered, yet by the end, you don't care, because it wasn't really about any of that anyway. You just step into this other world for a while...Tyger Tyger is an escape, and whatever satisfaction you derive from the film will have to come from that, since there's not much else to it.

If some of your young-adult life involved poverty, substances, and road trips, you'll recognize the world of Tyger Tyger and at last some of the characters. You'll also recognize the feeling of profoundness assigned to whatever the most interesting thing is in their lives, be it the William Blake poem referenced in the film, a "deep" conversation between two people with chemistry, or the revelation of someone's humanity as they tell their stories of trauma and pain.

The casting, acting, direction, photography, and new wave soundtrack selections are all enjoyable, all very well done. The film is also fairly compact, at 90 minutes; the length felt just right.

The script is so-so, and I can see how it's not a film for everyone. But as an example of its genre, it's not bad at all, it has a moderately satisfying ending, and like I said, it's a relief that it's never as shocking or absurd as it would've been if it had been made in past decades.

Solid B+ from me.

My Brain Hurts

I watched to the very end. It's a puzzle of scenes that could be interpreted as poetic if you dive into the writers mini bio. While I was able to see the resemblance of the "burning man" desert type lifestyle in this film I doubt many people can believe that there in fact is a place like this. Add junkie and a little mental health awareness to it and you have this film.

Pretentious amateur mess
ofumalow7 August 2021
Don't be fooled by all the 9 and 10 star "user comments," which if you check, you'll notice are all written by people who "mysteriously" have never commented about another movie before--in other words, they're filmmaker friends, family and crew. This makes a stab at doing something offbeat, but is completely hopeless, given that there appears to be no real script, the non-actors can't improvise to save their lives, and frankly the level of sociopolitical commentary is well-intended but childish. It's as if the most burned-out people you met at Burning Man last year decided "Let's make a movie! We'll be our own cast and crew! And we'll make it about like a dystopian future where people like us are the cool Robin Hood types!!" I give it credit for at least trying to say something--however poorly and incoherently--but it really is just about unwatchable. And inept as the movie is, the level of pretentious self-importance is hilarious. I mean, the opening credits alone say "A Film by (the director's name)" THREE TIMES. Uh, we get it: You made this thing. You're an artist! Except most artists don't feel the need to sign a work umpteen times, as if the signature were more important than the work itself.

A movie a definitely appreciate
mekalkozak26 March 2021
Gonna be very short. An amazing movie but not for everyone. This movie contains alot of confusing moment. But then again I think that strongly relates to the lifestyle if the characters. This movies takes place i personally call 'nowhere' as that best describes it. It's the end of the road, the last stop, the Freetown. Put the movie on, keep an open mind, and enjoy this magnificent screenplay of passion, fear, and recklessness.

Poetic
robbiepittman863 May 2021
It was so poetic the way this was done. Dylan Sprouse is a real talent and really toke this film to another level. If anybody has actually been to slab city knows how weird and lawless that place is so it was so fitting and the fact that they shot this there it must have been a crazy experience. Would love to see the behind the scenes footage.

Worth it
samwalt7 May 2021
This was such a cool movie. Has that art house, trippy feel to it. The main actors were great and really worked well together and without giving away to much the ending was totally unexpected. One of the best films i've seen this year.

I really liked his film...
andersvii9 March 2021
It's something new and very hard to categorize, at least for me, but I wouldn't call it just a "Western". Perhaps... "Near-Future-Criminal-Drama with drugs and love and feelings", I don't know. Anyway, I liked it a lot, and it leaves a lot of unanswered questions from the beginning to the end. I give it 10 for good perfomance and good chemistry between the actors. But I agree, it's not for everbody.

Kids run
mxvasilev18 September 2021
A dream. A nightmare. Non-conforming. Futuristic. Sincere. Falls into the ranks of fringe French cinema. For example, Happy End or Les derniers jours du monde (2009) and Our day will come or Notre jour viendra (2010). If Fear and loathing in Las Vegas (1998) had sex with Spun (2002) this would be their hipster-love-child. Right when you fall for it- it breaks your illusion. Don't believe the masses. See for yourself.

Shot in Slab City
tillmankharduo3 May 2021
I knew this was going to be good. Shot in the law-less and psychedelic city aka slab city. Great acting as was the editing and the end was just brilliant. This film deserves way more recognition that it currently has. Well done.

Warning: Spoilers
The movie was incredible, as it tells us the story of Luke and the incredible performance of Dylan, the ending left us all in doubt and we deduced that Luke died because of the event, but it was very interesting to see the real problems that a drug addict has.

I love the movie too much
nr-7523419 May 2021
A plot linked at times that perhaps lacks sense at first glance, but throughout history each piece is assembling this puzzle until completing its special magic at the end. This is a different side to addictions, which are still harmful to Luke's life, but through metaphors, the director manages to validate his intimate process while dealing with this evil in his own way.

A gritty, poetic ride...
e-plyler43026 May 2021
This film is a beautiful, raw, grungy ride through the parallels of both a greedy and selfless society. The actors all portray their roles with conviction, and really authentic humor and grime. I suggest everyone give it a watch.
