Product Description
Clint Eastwood is a hard-hitting high plains drifter who rides into town and single-handedly rescues a local nun (Shirley MacLaine) from a gang of attackers. After meeting a band of Mexican revolutionaries bent on resisting the French occupation of Mexico, the cowboy and Sister Sara decide to join forces with the freedom fighters and set off on a deadly mission to capture the enemy's garrison. But along the way, a steamy romance develops between them when the soft-spoken hero discovers the nun is not what she seems. A well crafted and oiled machine, Siegel does a great job of getting the film to run smoothly. Evidently MacLaine and director Siegel didn’t exactly enjoy working together and MacLaine wasn’t feminine enough for Siegel’s taste; he commented that she was a hard, cold woman who was hard to get to like. Eastwood surprisingly found her somewhat intimidating to work with due to the same qualities. Perhaps MacLaine was method acting either way the film survived the less than ideal working relationship and has gone on to become a classic western.
The restoration done for the film looks marvelous-colors pop and the burnished skin tones represent what the film should look like. I do question why Kinko decided to put the domestic versi0n and International version on separate discs-there’s only nine minutes of additional footage in the International cut and I wonder why it couldn’t have been authored using seamless branching. Nevertheless, both versions (using much of the same source) look marvelous. It doesn’t state if the 4K resorrari0n is from the original camera negative or not for both films but, either way, this bests the Blu-ray that Universal put out with a maxed out bit rate.
The audio sound terrific with a dialog up front and clear and Ennio Morricone’s iconic score crystal clear. Subtitles are provided in English only.
The special features included a good commentary track by film director Alex Cox on the international version, a vintage featurette with Clint Eastwood at home (with the restoration footage interpolated replacing the poor black and white footage used in the original version of thefeaturette) and poster/stills gallery. The domestic version features 2 TV and 4 radio spots along with the original theatrical trailer.
This is region A locked. Kino does provide a reversible cover with one side using the original poster artwork.
The result, however, is an entertaining if off-beat Western, set in Mexico around the 1860s, when much of the country was under French colonial rule. Eastwood is an American gunmen aiding the Mexican resistance movement for monetary reward who rescues a nun (McClaine) from several desperadoes. It quickly develops that the nun is an apparent early disciple of the Liberation School of Theology, she is a wanted woman by the French authorities for aiding and abetting the freedom fighters. Together they travel across the desert, avoiding the French forces, hostile Indian tribes, and their growing romantic feelings for each other.
It turns out that Eastwood and McClaine have some terrific chemistry together, which is important because their relationship has to carry the movie. McClaine’s hyper-kinetic performance (as a song and dance veteran, she knows how to move and use her voice to maximum effect) ) works in perfect counterpoint to Eastwood’s icy cool screen presence, she’s the fast-talking fast-moving hammer to his increasingly exasperated anvil.Without giving away any spoilers, Eastwood over time does become suspicious of McClaine’s real intentions, but by keeping her nun’s habit on she flashes a constant red light to any overt romantic moves on anyone’s part. The result is a film more in the vein of a “buddy movie,” such as “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” which makes it more enjoyable than a more straightforward romantic comedy might have been. The movie does not shortchange us on the Western elements either; there are several exciting, well-produced action sequences, including an effort to derail a train and the climactic rebel assault on a French garrison.
This DVD edition offers a sharp, clear picture and excellent sound quality; the cinematography and Sergio Leone’s score are both first-rate. Other than the film’s original trailer, this package offers no bonuses or special features, which is fine by me, I rarely watch them. Film buffs and historians may make note of the fact that McClaine receives top billing on-screen billing over Eastwood.
Recommended for: Clint Eastwood fans, Western fans, Shirley McClaine completists.
