Pretty much predictable ... but very enjoyable

Really enjoyed the movie. Story line is a bit of a stretch, but entertaining. The Native American role (August Schellenberg) was particularly interesting. And well acted. I live in wilderness myself and appreciate so much the portrayed isolation, respect, and love of the wild in the movie--including very real dangers and risks, as well as enchantment. There really can be magic in the solitude of a wilderness world.

As a retired aviator, the flight through canyons, and below mountain tops was immediately and extremely questionable. He should have been ABOVE those mountain ridges instead in barreling THROUGH them. Suicidal in my opinion. One or two peaks in the distance is one thing .... flying below the ridge tops, weaving between the ridges as a routine part of the flight plan ... uh-uh. If the airplane was incapable of flying higher, he shouldn't have been there in the first place. Not just 'easy' to happen, but 'likely' that one would run into a blind canyon, with no possible way out. Nuts!

Someone had very negative comments about the music. I disagree. The music (presumably Native American?)-- drums, voices in chant--was, in fact, kind of a high point for me. I thought it offered an interesting support/flavor to the story.

An incidental note: I purchased the DVD as "Used--Good". And got it for a very reasonable price. Turned out that when it arrived, it was as though someone had just removed the clear wrap, only. The DVD was essentially brand new. Totally unblemished case, the disc with not even a fingerprint on it. Played flawlessly. i was amazed and very pleased.

I returned here some many months later to add to my comments. I wanted to reinforce my comments regarding the 'music'/score. In a word, I found it almost as enjoyable as the movie itself. Admittedly, I enjoy the native american percussive quality of the sound track ... if you enjoy that quality of music ... you'll love this movie.

I did not like the brutality of this movie. A bear was killed in this movie by one of those bear traps and a bullet. I don't see how it reaped so many five star reviews. I had to fast forward through many scenes. About the only good thing with this movie was the wilderness photography. I would never recommend the purchase of the movie even for one dollar.

Zachary Ty Bryan and Kirsten Dunst, star as brother and sister, Sam and Bonnie, in this well constructed family adventure drama. When the light plane in which they are travelling, crashes in a wooded, mountainous area of British Columbia, they are befriended by a Native American called Khonanesta (August Schellenberg) who warns them of bad men in the woods. But who is this solitary man of the wilderness, who is highly skilled in survival techniques and attuned to the laws of nature. He talks to them of ancient wisdom and of a legendary kodiak bear that he calls Grandfather and of one Hunter in particular who has a very personal score to settle with this bear. It is Khonanesta's intention to take the children to Black Rock, where there is a logging operation and Ranger station, but this is several days trek away through the mountains. Along the way they face challenges and danger from nature and encounters with the hunters, who's leader, Quint, has almost as little regard for Human life as he has for the animals that he hunts. Meanwhile Bonnie and Sam's Mother, is part of a rescue party, making their way to the crash site. All the story elements blend skillfully together to the finale, through an ancient riddle to an ancient sacred place. It's hard to find serious fault with this film, which I first owned some years ago on VHS. At a little under 90 minutes long, it's well plotted and paced, with fine casting and characterisation. Beautifully filmed using gorgeous Canadian mountain scenery, I can't really think of a film that makes better use of outdoor locations. Rated PG, it makes a fine family film with wide age appeal, however it may be unsuitable for younger children, and there are several mild language issues. And what part does the kodiak bear, Grandfather, have to play in all this? You'll have to buy it and find out.
