In general I love these books and am hoping for more. Since the first one, with each new purchase I've looked forward to losing myself in the story and for the most part have done.
In The Silkworm, the chemistry mistake (hydrochloric acid is described as coming from sulphuric acid) brought me to a halt and made me too much aware of the author. In this one it's the unnecessary spelling of the accents. "Fink" is bad enough and then comes "t'ink," which causes me to think about the author instead of the story and wonder why she attempted this. But for all I know the author knows an Oonagh from Derry who speaks as I "hear" when reading, as opposed to how, for instance, John Hume spoke, or the Derry Girls.
I'm also puzzled by Oonagh's name. All the Irish women I know whose name is pronounced "oona" spell it as Una, with or without an accent above the U. In the book, Oonagh explains that she called herself Una when she went to England because English people couldn't pronounce Oonagh, which makes no sense. If they can sing "una paloma" why couldn't they call someone "oona" if the name was Una or Oonagh. A minor matter but odd.
Then there's Samhain. This being an Irish language word in common use in Ireland I pronounce it as "sow-in" (Irish has fewer letters and different pronunciation rules) in my head, and then its being shortened to Sammy by his parents brought me to another halt. But foreign words are often "localised," so again a minor matter.
I got over these concentration bumps and got lost again in the story and, as I find the main characters likeable and their interactions very enjoyable, I'm hoping for more books but please, author or editor, without "accents."
Five stars because it's so long that the annoyances don't add up to 20%.
