Q&A
Tracey Gold was incredible in that performance. I remember seeing it when it aired. I was just a little kid. Watching it today really hits hard.
She did an amazing job expressing real emotions. I totally believed it and got emotional with her. Bravo.
This show was way before my time, so this is my first time seeing this, and now Iâm crying at work.
She blew Kirk out of the water. What a dork.
Yeah Kirk's delivery in this scene really didn't hit. He looked like he was having to work hard to feign what little emotion he mustered here.
Tracey on the other hand rocked this scene...she came off totally believable.
I may not like Kirk, but his performance here was fine. He comes off as a teenager having to deliver really bad news that he does not want to give.
Its amazing how many people can look back and say they never liked him or his acting.
Tracey did clearly out shined everyone here.
That isn't unreasonable though. Many people go into shock when sending like that happens. He may have been asked to be more "in shock" so that the audience could focus on her delivery.
Kirk simply was not a good actor. I am a fan of his new religious comedy however.
He was already getting into that stuff on the show. Annoyed the cast increasingly
You mean the one where people get raptured I guess I can see how that would be funny
Dude can hold a banana like nobodyâs business.
Religiulous, stealing from a wrinkled old leftish dick.
His christian superiority complex must have been really getting into gear around this time. Fuck that smug, arrogant, theocratic little shit
Seeing a documentary or two, it certainly was in full swing by this point.
Iâm glad kirkâs fashion sense died.

That was my first thought. I grew up with Alan Thicke on Canadian tv before Growing Pains. He was always old. Now he looks like a dumb young feller, and I can forgive his dumbness more than I used to.
He was young at heart, which is why it wasn't creepy for him to "date" a 17 year old when he was 40.
Ew did he do that? I was always creeped out by him, but I didn't hear about that.
I watched an episode not that long ago and it was a total mind fuck because I was now OLDER than the parents. đŹ
I teared up
Yeah, she knocked that one out of the park for sure. Very credible.
Anyone know where I can watch full episodes of growing pains?
Came here to say this. You go Tracey Gold. Fucking great performance
Interesting because I thought her acting was bad
I did to until seeing this today.
I dunno. Feels forced to me.
I agree. Feels very much like a teenager doing their first emotional scene.
ok
Well that wasnât very funny!
Could it BE any less funny?!?!?!
Top comment on YouTube is "could I BE any more dead???"
After seeing that emotional scene I felt bad laughing as hard as I did.

I can even hear the announcerâs change in tone
This is a classic pitfall of 80s/90s sitcoms, particularly with the finale. They tend to get stupidly dramatic for a genre with the word âcomedyâ in the name.
My favorite example is the Dinosaurs finale. They extinct themselves. Left quite the impression on 9 year old me, who happened to be a big fan of the show at the time.
Agreed on most of your point but that finale of Dinosaurs wasnât a pitfall, that was an excellent idea for how to end the show about dinosaurs. I lean( how else could you end it?
I see your point, but the Cretaceous period lasted 79 million years. Itâs just kind of funny that the one thing that sticks with us is at some point they died.
As an adult I do appreciate that episode as an early media warning against humanitiesâ hubris in its dealings with nature.
They had a big episode of Family Ties that I think one Michael J Fox an Emmy. I think between that and MASH kind of set the genre up to do at least one at some point in the run.
Dude, spoilers! I was watching the documentary remake of the show, now I know how it ends!

This video really breaks down how important this episode was and highlights how great it really was.
Imagine if all episodes of the show were actual âGrowing Pains.â Think of the ratings!
Damn. No one told me life was gonna be this way.
claps slower than usual
Your jobâs a joke, youâre broke, your love lifeâs DOAAAAA
That song is fucking brutal
The percussion sounds after that was poor Sandy's car bouncing off the crash barriers.
Into the decorative fountain?
Well now Iâm sad!!!
I know! Me too!
i was hoping for a scene of matthew perry playing someone dying and feel ripped off.
These super serious episodes of light family comedy shows really bothered me as a young person because it felt like some horrible thing was trying to squirm its way into something i watched to relax.
In the actual episode Matthew was laying in a hospital bed after a drunk driving accident, but wasn't sick per se. Later on he died off camera. For the morbidly curious, here you go
thanks....it's sort of ironic
Yeah always hated it but seeing this now makes me think maybe it was the producers trying to help the actors out by letting them show they have range.
Tracey Gold killed it! Kirk was stinking up the joint.
TV just used to be incredibly preachy, part of why it's so notable that Seinfeld was a "a show about nothing".
Yeah I remember the aids episodes of Mr.belvedere and I think family matters.
I think even much smaller things than that, was just the norm for a lot of shows to end on some sort of moral lesson.
The episode of different strokes relating to pedophiles. This shit scars children lol
It was mostly an 80's/early 90's phenomenom where they wanted to tackle "real issues" like 70's sitcoms such as Maude,All In The Family,Jefferson,Mary Tyler Moore etc.But post 70's most sitcoms and especially family sitcoms existed in a Saccharin Escapist 50's sitcom world that was trying to appeal to a broad of audience as possible. So this stuff almost never sticked the landing.

there's a great series on Yt that does funny recaps of those Special Episodes
Nothing funnier than sitcom deaths...
Letâs all get together for a watch party and laugh together at Benâs funeral in Scrubs
I didn't even realize Ben Seaver transferred over to Scrubs. Was he a doctor?
Pedophile. Whole big thing
We had a funeral for a bird
IDK have you seen the films Kirk Cameron went on to make....
Very good point.
You see the one with the monkey not using a fork to eat salad and the result being that evolution is fake? Man Kirk Cameron is a fucking idiot
There wasn't a laugh track in that last scene so I didn't know when to laugh
Matthew Perry...dead!
Kirk Cameron...still alive!
He made all those Left Behind movies, god owes him
God doesn't want him, that's why he's still alive. Imagine how insufferable and clingy Kirk Cameron would be to god and jesus if he ever met them
Donât think thatâs the direction that hate monger will go
Believe it or not, straight to jail

Have you ever seen the Stephen king tv movie, âThe Langoliersâ? I think youâd like it, great flick to put on while folding laundry
Yet Kirk Cameron still walks among us.
God made the banana perfect for his hand.
Ray, put the bananas down.
In the words of Lewis Black: The good die young... but pricks live forever
If by "the good die young" you mean "addicts die in their 60s" then yes.
One guy is nice but did a bunch of drugs, the other guy is an asshole but was clean as far as I know. Almost like life and death isn't determined by how much people like you.Â
John Lennon and Kurt Cobain dead
Ted Nugent lives.
Shithole universe
Did you know John Lennon hit his first wife Cynthia and beat her?
And you support him. Tsk tsk tsk, what a hypocrite.
And?
