Last night’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy had fans in tears after a week of high tensions and frustration in the country following the death of another unarmed Black man. Thursday’s episode featured scenes reminiscent of this past summer, when peaceful crowds protesting police brutality and racial injustice were met with tear gas and armed officers. The protestors were brought into Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, where they were treated for their injuries inflicted at the protests.

While the emotional scenes hit close to home, viewers were most touched by the moment when Maggie’s (Kelly McCreary) boyfriend Winston (Anthony Hill), a Black man, was pulled over by white police, Yahoo reports. During the scene, Winston tries to stay on the phone with Maggie, a detail many viewers linked to the recent shooting and death of Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old man shot by a police officer in Minnesota during a traffic stop. According to reports, Wright was also on the phone, but was talking to his mother.

Although Maggie was distraught after Winston’s encounter with the police, the officers eventually let him go, but not before they made him leave the car, remove his mask and take a DUI test as they checked his trunk, which was packed with belongings he was bringing to move closer to Maggie. Winston explained that he was pulled over in the first place because “My bike rack was obscuring my license plate, and then they saw me. So, it just turned into one of those things, I guess.”

Viewers were shaken up by the scene, posting their reactions last night in real time on Twitter. “This is disgusting and so heart breaking. BLACK LIVES MATTER TODAY, TOMORROW, AND FOREVER. #greysanatomy,” one wrote.

The episode came to an end with Winston on the side of the road, back on the phone with Maggie. “I’m not good,” he admitted. “I’m not okay yet, you know? I just gotta breathe a little bit.”

This season, Grey’s has been tackling current issues, with the Covid pandemic taking center stage, but the show’s focus on police brutality on last night’s episode was a an especially timely inclusion as the nation continues to reel after the Daunte Wright shooting, which took place just miles from the Derek Chauvin trial.

Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 9/8c on ABC.
