"Tôkyô no koibito" aka "Tokyo Sweetheart" was a quite entertaining movie, IMO.
The plot, while quite vulgar but elaborate, works quite well to keep things lively. The movie is actually quite diverse, with comedy, drama, (somewhat) romance and even action along the way,
The amazing Setsuko Hara and the fantastic Toshiro Mifune, what can I say? Pretty awesome to see the duo at work. Lots of familiar faces around too.

Setsuko Hara and Toshiro Mifune, need I say more? It's hard to believe that this is their only other feature together (the other one being The Idiot) because they had such a great dynamic.
I really loved this one, despite the ending being a tad weird with mood shifting. It's a more or less lighthearted little romantic comedy with some darker topics underneath and it's worth a watch if you ask me.
There's Setsuko Hara hanging out with a bunch of benevolent street urchins; Mifune being eye candy, winning a drunken street brawl filmed in jidaigeki style and spotting an apron at one point; pachinko balls flip-flopping through the streets of Tokyo; jewelry both fake and real frequently changing hands and causing havoc; people turning into caricatures and caricatures turning into people; and, to cap things off, an underwater ballet at the bottom of Tokyo Bay.
Unfortunately there's also quite a bit of dead air and in the end the whole might be a bit less than the sum of its parts. Still, nice to get a glimpse of a part of Japanese 50s cinema normally completely invisible from Western eyes.
A hidden gem!
Feels rather light-hearted although it tackles some darker topics like poverty in post-war Japan and the severe illness of a friend.
The main characters are loveable and charming.
And who would miss the opportunity to see Mifune doing the dishes, wearing an apron?
Obviously a film with Setsuko Hara & Toshiro Mifune is good and the scenes between them were great. Overall it's somewhat bittersweet but mostly light-hearted and charming little film. The ring subplot was quite delightful, especially the dancing at the bottom of the Tokyo Bay.

A charming, though unambitious, film held up by the two tentpoles of Toshiro Mifune and Setsuko Hara. Thoroughly enjoyed every part of the ring subplot.
Mifune is sooooo male-wife coded here ugh like the bit where he's fixing a roof shirtless with a floppy hat on???!!! When he's doing the dishes in a tank top and a little frilly apron???!!! A man!!!
Une des rares occurrences où Mifune et Hara partagent l’écran. C’est un beau p’tit film qui est à des années lumière des cinémas des grands maitres de l’époque, mais j’ai quand même beaucoup ri et puis Setsuko est radieuse avec son béret d’artiste de rue.
A decent film with some delightful moments caught up between comedy & melodrama. The acting is not top notch but it certainly was enough to get through the plot. The chemistry between Mifune & Hara was nice. Some shots of Ginza were fabulous.
A unique blend of comedy and drama among the poor. Good cast with Toshirô Mifune and Setsuko Hara as it's main attractions, but I wasn't sure what to expect from this one going in. But with all it's little situations and colorful personalities, it really won me over. There is even some underwater dancing going on for no apparent reason whatsoever, except it'd be fun. One where the characters and what happens to them stands-out.
