Sweet, endearing, more than a bit trite. But it gets close to succeeding as a re-work of Local Hero.
I was the boom operator for this film! Still can’t believe I worked with such a great cast and crew Montana Film forever!
“Happy cows are tasty cows!”
Would make a great double feature with the disney channel original movie Cow Belles (2006). Also love the concept of "secret quinoa". Cute!
ok, it was beautiful, and it had the most memorable musical score out of any film i saw here, but this is primo oscarbait, and i dont say that lightly. a japanese businessman is thawed by american hospitality & makes a hispanic friend who he gets to help out and everyone becomes a little more open minded, it has "best picture" written all over it.
the coolest thing abt this movie is that the protagonist speaks japanese, the deuteragonist speaks spanish, and they can only speak to each other via broken english. genuinely quite cool to watch.

yeehaw 🤠
i love you!
wow i really enjoyed this film, i watched it last weekend at the tallgrass film festival, its a little late of a review but.
this movie was so grounded, and was beautiful with its country cinematography, and it was honestly refreshing to see ranchers and country people who werent just southern caricatures, and actually people. i really liked how well both tokyo and montana was portrayed in the film, while tokyo was portrayed like a city would be, montana was so interesting designed for this movie, mostly being outdoors, and only having hideki interact with 2 or 3 groups of people there. i dont know, i have lots more to say but i really need to rewatch sometime. praying for a physical release

Tokyo Cowboy was one of the most unique and refreshing watches I have seen this year! Stellar performances from all, also incredible to hear from the director himself after the film finished and he talks about all the work that went into creating this. It was evident from the start that a lot of heart was put into this and it really shows. Some of the best supporting characters too and so many scenes had me dying of laughter. I really enjoyed this, everyone please go see it if you can!
Such a sweet low stakes movie. Every character is likeable, you are rooting for basically everyone. It’s nice to watch a low impact film that takes itself seriously enough to deliver a tight message within a breezy plot. I mean who doesn’t want to be a cowboy right?
“Tokyo Cowboy” is an endearing film from start to finish, balancing deadpan humor and subtle drama in its familiar yet satisfying story of self-discovery, greatly enhanced by good performances and clever writing.

Film Analysis: Tokyo Cowboy (2023) by Marc Marriott
It’s a feel good, fish out of water type story that you’ve seen a billion times. I like some of the ideas that they had here but in the end it was much too generic and cliched for my taste. At no point do the conflicts feel like they have real stakes. After it ended the main impression it left on me was a craving for Hardee’s.
