No matter when you go it’s crowded. And it’s crowded with people trying to all take the same photo. Be patient, and your chance will come but all the whole in some installations staff will be moving you along. Remember to wear bottoms that can roll up or your pant legs will get wet in the water installation since the water is almost 12” high. It’s a cool visual experience but not sure if I need to return. This is more of a one and done deal for tourist. It rained the day we went so the silver rock/moss exhibit wasn’t fun with everyone holding umbrellas.

Great place to visit. Not overcrowded. This is the oldest and largest museum. I could be wrong. It is not far from the art museum, the Ueno park, Ueno Zoo and also a science museum. It is a stop shop. When the weather is great you can sit around the fountain and relax. I will recommend this place as you get options. I did not take a lot of pics. But enjoyed my experience there.

Well worth a trip - lovely exhibition, amazing building. I spent around 3 hours looking at the various displays. Truly fascinating and gives a great understanding of the Edo period.

    Staff were fantastic.

I visited in October 2019...just never wrote the review.

A small, jewel-box of a museum. Great for when you are tired of shopping in nearby Omotesando Hills. The gardens are lovely. The overall setting is peaceful and serene. The gift shop is epic. The art work is not the best (compared to much larger and more crowded museums), but well curated.

    We loved it.

I happen to enjoy looking at old pictures of myself because it is fun!! I look at my 5th grade yearbook all the time and I happen to look like myself 10 years ago!! I wrote an essay at the end of the year which was about my long soul searching 5 years in elementary school and how I became a changed man!! I am obviously being extra and I believe I was the same for all 5 years!! Why I am going on this rant is because I wrote about being excited for a trip to the Museum of Natural History in NY!! I happen to go there a lot because it is fun but I happen to be in Tokyo at the moment and I saw there was a replica here!! I went today and it was very similar but they had seismographs and clocks and also a lot of taxidermy!! I am a big fan of fake animals and I think if I got a bull head in my apartment or a fake gorilla people wouldn’t wonder why I am still single!! It was all very good and it was cheap to get in!!

Last time I visited, they had a huge retrospective of the Japanese painter Yayoi Kusama. This time was no less exciting with the life work of Henri Matisse. Everything is there from his very first student painting through to full a scale model and recreation of the Rosary Chapel in Vence. This exhibition is everything an overview should be and the audio guide takes you effortlessly through the exhibition spaces. there is so much to linger over.. As a result, this summer I am going to take myself to the Matisse museum in Nice and then to the Rosary Chapel in Vence.

Amazing collection of works within a brilliant building. Recommended for both artists and architects alike even if you're on a short stay in Tokyo. Notable of all pieces would be the picasso ones. Only negative was that when I purchased tickets I put the 1000 bill down slowly next to the tray and the ticket lady picked it up and slammed it into the tray in frustration. Look, I understand its considered impolite to not put money on trays but for her to take the note and throw it into the tray as a ticket officer was over the top it's not like I put the threw the note down.

Fantastic experience at this premier art museum and the viewing deck on top of the building. The "Our Ecology" exhibit was fascinating and very accessible. Judos to the curators, who brought together stunning work from artists all over the world to reimagine and explore the world's environmental woes. Yet the exhibit managed to be awe-inspiring instead of depressing. The presentation was simple but beautiful. The entry price includes access to the viewing deck, which is a bargain. Wonderful gift shop as well.

So beautiful to see at night (one of the few temples accessible 24-hours a day). This unique shrine is well worth a visit when you're exploring Akihabara!

A really really amazing experience for the parents and the kids on "English Wednesday".

We speak no Japanese but there were some English speaking guides who gave us a heads up as to what activities were popular and would be reserved quickly.

Top tips from us to get the most from your day:

    - get there earlier than your starting time (try for ~30mins)
    - check the kidzania website first to see what activities or jobs may be interesting for your kids and go for those first
    - you can have a maximum of 2 live reservations for jobs at any one time, and thus once you reserve two jobs, you must complete one before you can reserve the next. the system makes a lot of sense
    - once you reserve your first job, check the live monitors (or the app) for a job opening list sorted by time
    - a lot of the jobs which involve food are popular and are great because the kids get to eat what they create, and mostly earn a wage as part of the activity

Be respectful to other guests and staff, and enjoy!

We would rate this better than Disney.A really really amazing experience for the parents and the kids on "English Wednesday".

We 2 visited for an hour on a Sunday afternoon in Dec. Exceeded expectations, but one needs to understand Japanese (or be accompanied by someone who does) in order to have a complete experience.

Lifesize reproductions of Edo-era buildings in the neighborhood located near the Museum along the Sumida River. Brochures with limited descriptions in several languages. There are no explanatory panels in the exhibit, but instead there are several passionate people dressed in period clothing who explain the details of the buildings and the lives of the people who lived in Edo. NOTE that these explanations are in Japanese. Examples of interesting things we learned are that the population was 60% male, the rice storage tower was built to be highly fire-resistant - while the buildings around it would have burned down several times, and the water from wells along the Sumida River was salty so well water was used primarily for cleaning purposes (clothes, etc) while drinking water had to be purchased daily.

    Fun and informative.

Lots of really interesting interactive and innovative exhibits. Strange building involved travelling up lots of escalators and rather cold and empty in places. Did get crowded with kids as it was a Sunday and there was an unnecessarily officious system of queuing to get a reserved space for another queue to get into films but still worth a visit.

The museum is worth checking out. The top two floors are good. The rest is just weird and kind of worthless. The interesting thing about the works of art on the top two floors is that the best pieces are "influenced" by more well known western (European) artists. In other words, you can see the clean influence from the european artists and you could even say the original Japanese works are just knock-offs of other pieces.

Amazing. Design 21 21 had a very interesting Exhibition on Material and the way its used by the animal world and humans , One was made by a crow which made its nest out of Coat hangers, which may be due to greater bendability of the hangers over twigs. A cross section of Japanese Green Woodpeckers Nest. The building itself is also amazing by Japanese's Architecture Tadao Ando.

Good food in a lovely setting. Staff were charming. Maybe not the fuller European flavours we were expecting, but the novelty of the venue made up for that. We were the only Westerner diners for lunch.
