- Craig R13 contributionsAlfie Jazz House is a great spot, not necessarily a hole in the wall as it's been there for over 40 years and is known as a key jazz destination. I found myself there early March, during the covid-19 scare so the crowd was quite diminished but that was the only thing lacking! The band was incredible, the staff were attentive and kind, and the atmosphere was utterly perfect. If you are in Tokyo and enjoy a drink and some jazz (I can't speak to the food as I didn't have any, but i'm sure its wonderful), then make sure you check out this spot. The owner has supposedly ran the place for about 40 years and she was there that night, always a pleasant sight to see the owner enjoying their own establishment. Again, this is a must attend, even if you aren't the jazz enthusiast I pretend to be, i'm sure you'll enjoy yourself. Also to note, it's right next to the subway stop, so super accessible. - Paul MSan Francisco, CA37 contributionsThis tiny bar is in Shinjuku’s Golden Gai district, which is much more fun, pleasant, and intimate feeling than Kabukicho. Soul Stream is an absolute gem. A small room, can seat maybe a dozen guests total. The highlight is the really incredible sound system - think high end 70’s hi-fi, which sounds amazing to ears accustomed to Bluetooth speakers and AirPods - and the non stop stream of awesome back catalog soul music from the 70s. The music sounds so rich, detailed, and three dimensional. I play bass and especially enjoyed the warm and rich sound of James Jameson and other bass greats from that era. Songs you won’t know unless you are a soul aficionado, but will fall in love with instantly. DJd in real time by the owner,from a big wall of thousands of LPs. The staff and the vibe are warm and friendly, the drinks are tasty and reasonably priced. They asked us if we played any instrument and as my bf is a guitarist we spent a couple of hours participating in a jamm. The owner is very nice and though his English is not great we were able to communicate. A few notes that I have not seen in reviews. 1 GREAT News no smoking allowed. 2. Cash only.
