Okay, what just happened to me? I thought I was sitting down to watch a documentary, and instead I was taken on one of the wildest rides of my life! This is SO MUCH MORE than a documentary. Familiar with the Bronte sisters or not, this two-part work of cinematic art is a must-see for everyone who has so much as picked up a copy of "Wuthering Heights", "Jane Eyre", or "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall." I happened to be reading "Wildfell" at the time of viewing this, and it added a new layer of depth to what I was reading. Get ready for some emotional turmoil throughout the whole thing but for goodness sake, just WATCH IT.

Being a huge Bronte fan, I was interested in seeing once again a take on the Bronte family - This two part series is excellent - in casting and story line. The filming captures the desolation of Haworth on the moors and the brilliant minds that existed within the parsonage. There have been so many theories about what the Bronte family was like. This series gives us a new view on a family that thrived on genius which also destroyed them . Really recommend a look see.

Having just returned from a visit to England, Haworth and the Bronte Parsonage, and having been a fan of the Bronte Sisters for many years, this DVD is the absolutely best depiction of life there for the Brontes I've ever seen. The slice of life here, the remarkable recreation of the Parsonage, the period costumes and the acting make it seem as if we are really there with Charlotte, Emily and Jane and their brother and father. I have watched this twice and intend to re-watch annually.

What I liked: I love the real story of the Brontes and this does a pretty good job of telling it. The actress who plays Charlotte is so good. I also liked the scene where Emily gets the idea for Heathcliff.

What I disliked: There is an unnecessary graphic sex scene which, in my opinion, adds nothing to the story. It’s for shock value only. I’m upset it’s there because I would have liked to have recommended this movie to younger family members.

What I’m on the fence about: There is use of a symbolic flame placed above the Bronte children’s heads when they’re being creative and developing their genius. When adult Branwell becomes depressed and despondent, the child version of him no longer has the flame above his head and he is rejected by his sisters. I understand the symbolism of the flame but I can’t decide if it’s necessary. It’s almost odd and disruptive to the flow of the entire show.

Before I purchased this product I thought this would be a mini series of about 3 or 4 chapters at least, but then I realised it had the lenght of a regular 2-hour movie, divided in 2 parts. Nonetheless, this production takes you to a very intense path in the Brontë family, especially these 3 gifted ladies and the struggle in their lives and time. beautifully portrayed both in characters and scenaries, this film is definitely one of my favorites.

Indeed a masterpiece. I have a child who experiences seizures, so I do NOT plan to have her watch this because of a scene of shocking realism. Otherwise, her sisters will see it. Anyone can have a seizure, and they are incredibly scary. Just get an overdose of some medicine and you will have one. The acting is perfect as well as the technical and directing.

This is a stark, honest portrayal of three years in the lives of the Brontes. The production team has taken the time to recreate their lives and environment as authentically as possible; if you have ever been to Haworth and wandered through the Parsonage Museum, you'll recognise all the places in the movie. On a recent visit to Haworth, a gentleman in the graveyard told us that for the movie, all actual locations had been used with the exception of the exterior of the Parsonage. This couldn't be used because so many trees had been planted throughout the graveyard since the lives of the Brontes, transforming the appearance of the house. So, a replica of the front of the Parsonage was built on the moors. The characterisation in the movie is excellent, though the lives of the Brontes at times appear so bleak, and the importance of their rich inner lives are afforded so little screen time that it's difficult to see how these women managed to create the masterpieces their did. I really appreciated the attention to detail, and the attempt to rescue them from the romanticism that usually surrounds their lives. I only wish the scope had been wider - the series is in only two parts, and covers just three years in the lives of the sisters.
