Rezension aus Deutschland vom 5. Juli 2010

Lulu's early music (recorded on the Decca label) was strongly influenced by R+B but when she moved to Columbia, Mickey Most recorded her as a mainstream pop singer, not always giving her ideal material to record. The low point (for me) is Boom bang a bang, the song that Lulu took to second place in the Eurovision song contest of 1969. Not only is this song here in its standard version, its also here in French and Italian versions. Well, it made number two in the UK (where it was her biggest solo hit) and no doubt proved successful in other European countries, so a lot of people love that song.
This compilation includes all of Lulu's hits between 1967 and 1969. This includes an unusual type of international double-sided hit. In America, the A-side was To sir with love, which spent over a month at number one, while the B-side was The boat that I row. In Britain, the A-side was The boat that I row, which made the top ten, while To sir with love (which Mickey Most apparently didn't like) languished on the B-side. Both tracks were brilliant, unlike some of Lulu's other hits with Mickey Most.
Despite the phenomenal success of To sir with love, Lulu's other singles made only limited impact in America, but she had UK top ten hits with Me the peaceful heart and I'm a tiger, UK top twenty hits with Let's pretend and Boy and a minor UK hit with Love loves to love love.
This compilation includes all those hits as well as covers of Day tripper (Beatles), To love somebody, I started a joke (both Bee Gees), Mighty Quinn (written by Bob Dylan but a hit for Manfred Mann), Show me (Joe Tex), Gimmie some loving (Spencer Davis group) and Cry like a baby (Box tops) among others.
In many ways, this is a fine collection though it has some dodgy moments. While this period of Lulu's career was her most commercially successful, it doesn't represent her best music overall. It would be very easy to knock some stars off the rating but with forty-nine tracks there is enough music here worth hearing to justify the price. Of course, if you actually enjoy the tracks I regard as dodgy, you'll get even greater pleasure from this collection.

Rezension aus Kanada am 19. Februar 2013
I bought this CD for just one song, Morning Dew. I absolutely love this song and I love her treatment of it. I had this song on on old 45 so when I saw this CD i bought it immediately and I don't regret it. 39 great songs on two CD's, worth every penny.

Rezension aus den Vereinigten Staaten vom 10. Januar 2013
I consider myself a bit of an expert on 60s pop and rock and there aren't too many artists I have let slip through the cracks of my cd collection over the years.I'm ashamed to admit that Lulu was one such artist and I'm sure glad I bought this collection and remedied the situation.I always found "To Sir With Love" a guilty pleasure when I was younger and I absolutely loved her version of Neil Diamond's "The Boat That I Row"(in fact,it's better than Neil's).But like so many U.S. fans, that's pretty much where it ended for me as far as being familar with Lulu's recorded output. After watching a video of her performing on youtube I decided it was time to give her a closer listen and this collection seemed like a huge value and good way to take a chance on seeing whether I would enjoy more of her music. Here's the verdict.I LOVED IT!!!!How could I have overlooked such a great artist for so long? Lulu has an incredible voice, very soulful and well suited to many types of material. She can really bring it!!!I won't go track by track on this generous compilation but let's just say "Boy","To Love Somebody",Me,The Peaceful Heart"and "Best Of Both Worlds" are among the many highlights. And of course the 2 before mentioned tracks. If you like good music then you'll want to buy this.If you're like me you'll wonder what took you so long!

4,0 von 5 Sternen The Best...and Worst of Lulu's Early Work
Rezension aus den Vereinigten Staaten vom 10. September 2016
Although the material is a bit spotty on this collection, one thing that can never be doubted is Lulu's vocal abilities, and this set certainly showcases the power and versatility of her voice. From the glorious (tracks like "To Sir, with Love," "Best of Both Worlds," "The Boat that I Row," and "Let's Pretend") to the awkward and lyrically horrible ("I'm a Tiger," "March," and the Eurovision winner "Boom Bang a Bang," which the listener is treated to in three languages, no less. The second disc features more standards and covers than the originals which dominate disc one, and it's great to hear Lulu show a different facet of her voice. It's quite incredible to think that she wasn't even 20 years old when the songs were recorded. She certainly proved the naysayers wrong who predicted all she could do was shout, after the initial success of her cover of the classic song of the same name.

Though many of these tracks are available on other compilations, this package is well worth owning and will delight Lulu fans with its thorough track listing and detailed liner notes.
