If you’re disappointed by Showtime‘s decision to un-renew Uncoupled, you’re not alone.
The Neil Patrick Harris-led comedy dropped its eight-episode first season on Netflix in July 2022, only to be canceled by the streamer in January 2023. Showtime announced plans to save the series a month later, formally ordering a second season, but that decision has since been reversed.
Now that news of Uncoupled‘s second cancellation has been made public, the show’s cast is beginning to speak out. Jai Rodriguez, who recurred as one half of the Jonathans, posted this brief response on his Instagram stories: “Welp, Guess I’m not going to NYC in May to shoot.”
And Dan Amboyer, who played one of NPH’s love interests, posted this heartfelt message to Instagram: “Sad that there won’t be a season 2 of Uncoupled after all. Thankful for my experience, would have loved to see this story go on. Had my eyes set on it as soon as I heard about it, originally. One of my favorite projects (to be a small part of)—and a meaningful moment for me to finally play a gay role on screen. Magic people, master creators. Can’t wait to see what they cook up next.”
Created by Darren Star and Jeffrey Richman, Uncoupled followed NPH as New York City real estate agent Michael, who suddenly found himself single after being unceremoniously dumped by longtime boyfriend Colin (Tuc Watkins).
Unfortunately, the show left viewers on a number of cliffhangers, none of which will get resolved now that a second season is off the table. Most importantly, the finale ended with Michael (NPH) returning home to discover a distraught Colin, who questioned whether they made a terrible mistake. It was a major turn of events, with Richman admitting to TVLine, “We enjoy painting ourselves into a corner.”
Other developments that would have been explored in Season 2 included Michael’s friend Stanley (Brooks Ashmanskas) being diagnosed with cancer, Billy (Emerson Brooks) dedicating his life to becoming more serious, and Suzanne (Tisha Campbell) coming face to face with her son’s father.

Sad, got my hopes up and now dashed to the ground
I’m actually curious. Since showtime reversed it decision, does that mean uncoupled might go back to Netflix?
Since they canceled it in the first place I seriously doubt it.
I’m a big fan of NPH, but this show was always a longshot really.
Might’ve been more successful in other countries, but a show where almost every character is gay isn’t going to have strong support in a country where more than 1/3 people think that gay people shouldnt have the same rights as everyone else (37% of Americans are still against same-sex marriage)
There are a lot of hot gay shows….Queer as Folk, L Word, and Pose just to name a few 😳
I am bummed. Why do they not support some of the best shows? It would have been wonderful to see the storylines progress.
Why don’t fans watch shows? If enough people watch a show, it gets renewed.
Very disappointed in Uncoupled being cancelled Again. Will miss seeing Tuc Watkins, NPH, and the rest of the talented cast- and how their stories will be tied up.
Why get into anything streaming the’ll just cancel it on a whim or delete it for tax purposes.
Are you 5? Do you not remember broadcast shows being canceled halfway through the first season and never being seen again? It’s not about streaming. This is just how tv has ALWAYS worked.
YUP. I think that in the early days of streaming, some of the outlets revived some shows that were cancelled on broadcast TV. This lead to an expectation/hope (but, really EXPECTATION) that streaming outlets would operate differently, and let shows conclude naturally.
.
But those were just loss leaders. Those early “resurrections” by streaming outlets were SOLELY an attempt to get more subscribers. The outlets lost a lot of money on those resurrections. But by hiring the crews and execs of those shows, they were able to quickly build the “TV series” aspect of their business.
.
But that is all it was. It wasn’t a shift in strategy, or a whole new paradigm. It was a cash rich new media outlet(s) quickly amping up production capabilities, combined with attracting some new eyeballs to their platform (TV fans rather than movie fans).
.
Now that they’ve staffed up that division, they will operate the same way traditional TV nets do.
.
Anything that doesn’t meet expectations, success/profits wise, is cut.
They are making it easier and easier to want to cancel services. I was actually happy they picked it up and now they changed it to a negative thing. Could have honored the pick up and kept some people happy
So. Disappointed Uncoupled will not be returning. I thought it was a great show. Left with way too many cliffhangers not to return. Not fair to those who did watch
SUPER disappointed.
As with all good shows, they axed it.
Showtime really is missing the mark with quirky dramedy shows like Uncoupled and recent one-season-wonder I Love That For You.
I was hoping to see who Suzanne’s son was fathered by, and had a hunch it might actually be Claire Lewis’ ex-husband. In the scene where Marcia Gay Harden confronts her ex after divorce, I’m pretty sure Suzanne was at the bar flirting with her son Kai’s bartender friend and never saw him to recognize or remember him from European study abroad. Just a hunch, but will never know now.
You need to remember though the people that orignally picked it up for a 2nd season they don’t work there anymore and oh right now paramount is talking about selling paramount + to appolo global so right now they have other priorities and if it wasn’t a show they intially green lit then they probably. won’t go foward with it
How weird. I was just thinking about this show yesterday and wondering if the second season was still a go. Guess I got my answer. What a shame.
What a shame, just when you think we can enjoy something like UNCOUPLED..it goes away…
Once you renew a show you should not be allowed to Un renew something. Network should have to pay the actors wages as they could have turned down other projects.
Is it me or does Showtime do ZERO promotion for their shows anymore? This is the type of show I would check out and I’ve heard nothing about it. In fact, the only show on this network that I have seen ads for is The Curse- which I thought was terrible. I see some ads for The Chi- but I’m already hooked on that.
Very disappointed to see a quality show go unceremoniously down the drain.
So disappointed to hear that Uncoupled will not have a second season. I used to believe that shows had great lives on the non-network stations like Netflix and Showtime, but they appear to be going the same direction as the networks. In the meantime, awful garbage reality shows keep getting renewed. It used to be cut the cord, I think the next step is cut the TV cord and read a book.
I am sorry to read this. This was the Male version of Sex in the City.
