As Newcastle gear up for a trip to Nottingham Forest on Saturday, the debate over who should be starting at left-back rolls on. Dan Burn is likely to remain Eddie Howe's main man, but calls to get Tino Livramento back into the team after a fine start to the season are getting louder.

Fans in the Chronicle comments section have been debating the question all week, and many are eager to see the former Southampton prospect get his chance to impress again. They also want to see him cover for what they reckon is Burn's main weakness - pacy, tricky wingers.

Robin85 was all for it: "Not even a question. Tino is clearly better both defensively and going forward than Burn." Other supporters voiced similar thoughts, like Caymandays who said: "Love the guy... but once he is turned there's no way back for him, simple."

Other options at left-back include Chelsea loanee Lewis Hall, who's failed to make a splash amongst the readers. WrongToon said: “Where is the mention of Hall? Burn isn't a LB. Tino, like Trippier, isn't a LB either but is versatile and capable. Hall IS a LB. We're about to pay >£30m for him. If he's not ready to come into the first XI then he's not worth that money. We've not bought anyone in Jan because of FFP, but we've got a £30m player warming the bench every week.”

Samsam12 wants to see more out of the options: “Livramento has shown he can play RB & LB and possibly midfield whilst Hall IS a LB and we are still asking should either of them play after Burn has been completely exposed trying to cover LB. AND don't forget we have Targett."

"I don't think anyone is trying to undermine Eddie Howe and fans will accept his team selection. However some common sense is needed for a position that has cost us dearly and not playing a natural full back.”

Jonnyhood reckons the rest of the team needs a critical eye too: “When things are going well, everyone's a hero but when they aren't, we single out players to blame and it looks like Dan Burn is the one getting it. To be fair, if everyone else was operating as they were last season, there wouldn't be a problem but we aren't, and Dan Burn isn't the only one."

"We've lost Pope, Dubs has been great but Pope gives us more. Schar and Botman have been superb again, and Lascelles did well to stand in but Trippier has not been the player he was last season, not in every game and he's cost us a few, he's just regaining his form now."

"Bruno is also a shadow of himself, he's not the same player as last season, still good, brilliant in some games but not the same player as last season. Almiron is back to all of the energy, work rate and running, but no end product and Joelinton is another who isn't playing as well as he did last time out. Isak is still scoring but we're not seeing the same magic.”

But Burn is still a big part of life on Tyneside despite the recent clamour, as Holdtheline says: “God I love this lad, his story to get here, the way carries himself, doesn’t need 10 other players behind him when he wants a chat with the opposition… but, this league is hard and he struggles once he’s turned.”

Camandays agrees: “Love the guy. His passion. He is solid and gives 100% but Howe needs to know when to rest him against fast wingers. Once he is turned theres no way back for him simple. I know he knows it and positions himself brilliantly 99% of the time but its that 1% that costs us all the time.”

Regardless of fan criticisms, Howe is still loyal to Burn. “Dan has been absolutely outstanding since he arrived at the football club,” the Newcastle boss said after Luton last week. “He played a huge part in our brilliant season last year, and our excellent defensive record."

“I thought he was magnificent against Aston Villa. He was a big part of why we played so well. Tino is an outstanding player, and no doubt will have a huge bearing on our future. But there’s more than one aspect of the game to think about when I pick the team.”
