Dated, but so was the period of the story

Alec Guiness brings his subtle approach to acting here at the climax of his long career and his experience and confidence shows. The work is well known and a modern version while quite good is a pale effort by the way of comparison despite its stellar cast. All of the cast here are at least as good and when all is said, George Smiley, played by Guiness is not only at the focal point, but is also the main player to the business. Having less attention to Smiley is comparable to imagining Hmalet without the Prince. There is meat to the text and it is hard to limit the material to that of the common film as the ability to find clues is akin to peeling layers of the proverbial onion, or more aptly as the title screen displays, the Russian nesting dolls. Skip the newer version and watch this even at the longer length. Details hard to understand under the cuts in the former are no longer the issue and the logic of the spying mind is laid out much for the better appreciation.

There is nothing that I can say about this production that it does not say for itself. I have watched the entire series more than 25 times. That is not an exaggeration. I have become obsessed with Prideaux, Bland, Guillam, Smiley, etc. This enormously complex plot is passed through your eyes and ears like a death dream, but filled with moments that will put a shiver up your spine. One must not live and die without seeing this all the way through, at least once, but the truth is that you will need subsequent viewings if you are going to come away with the feeling that you have truly understood everything.

I saw this miniseries when if was first broadcast in 1980, hard on the heels of Alec Guinness' memorable role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars IV. I have placed it among my favorite BBC series, along with "I, Claudius" and "Brideshead Revisited". I decided to take a look back at it in preparation for reviewing the new version starring Gary Oldman as George Smiley. I will defer my opinion on that until I've watched it twice.

The cast for this version must have employed virtually half of the better English character actors. There are 41 feature cast members, ten of which I recognize immediately, such as Ian Richardson, Ian Bannen, Alexander Knox, Joss Ackland, Sian Phillips, and Patrick Steward, whose dialogue consists of a single word. I read the book and I don't remember it well now, but I recall in 1979 that it followed the book quite closely. Like the earlier "The Spy Who Came In From The Cold", it is gritty and no nonsense. Not a single trace of James Bond tomfoolery. Even better, it was filmed when the Cold War was still very real, and Russian spooks were a very, very real fear. What makes it even more genuine sounding (albeit annoying since it is unexplained) is that it uses a jargon (which may or may not be real MI-6 patter)such as lamp-lighters (internal security) and scalp hunters (specialists in "wet work").

Guinness as George Smiley is virtually perfect (and all other roles are played to a tee). It appears he may have been aged a bit with make-up from his Obi-Wan appearance. He appears in one flashback scene perhaps 20 years before, and it seemed easy to make him look younger. Even the small roles are limned with perfection, such as Beryl Reid as Connie Sachs, the retired Circus head of research, with arthritic hands, who is now an Oxford tutor. Steward's performance as the chief heavy, Carla, may be one of the best things I have seen him do (I am not a fan of his.) It was based entirely on body English responding (or not responding) to George Smiley's interrogations. I did not even recognize him, as he had some hair, and his face was in shadow (unlike his great role as Sejanus in "I, Claudius"). Possibly the best other main performances were Ian Richardson as Bill Haydon and Ian Bannen as Jim Prideaux. I have never seen Richardson in a Shakespearean play, but he was marvelous in the BBC series "House of Cards" and in the film "Brazil." Ian Bannan seemed to be a staple in British spy thrillers such as "the Mackintosh Man" starring Paul Newman.

The American version was rearranged from the seven part British version to put things in a sequence which better agreed with the book. Unlike virtually most other spy flicks, the realism simply crackles with verisimilitude. One can chuckle about Sherlock Holmes never carrying a pistol. No such bravado here, as even Smiley pulls out his Glock when the final scene comes, and he is constantly on the lookout for people tailing him.

I do sense that Gary Oldman may have taken some lessons on playing George Smiley from Guinness' performance here. If you were not fond of the remake, come back and try the original.

The experience of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is enhanced with watching both this and the movie adaptation also available on Amazon. Personally I liked the characters of the Circus better in the movie although Smiley was played equally well in both.

冒頭のシーンで、疑惑の４人が三々五々会議室に集まってきて、そろったところでパーシー・アレリンが「では始めよう」と宣言する。物語の始まりと４人の謀議の始まりを重ね合わせたわくわくする導入部だ。
　続くタイトルロールでは、マトリョーシュカ人形が現れ、その穏やかな表情が、怒ったような悲しいような表情に、そして顔のない人形へと変わっていく。これを観て、原作のラストのほうで、主人公ジョージ・スマイリーがマトリョーシュカ人形の絵を見て物思いにふけるあのくだりが脳裏に浮かんだ。
　アレック・ギネス演じるスマイリーは原作のイメージ通りだった。原作者ル・カレは自らギネスに出演を依頼し、本作の彼の演技を絶賛したという。同じ原作の映画「裏切られたサーカス」でスマイリーを演じたゲイリー・オールドマンは、きっとギネスをお手本にしたのだろう。
　原作では、スマイリーの妻アンは奔放、元同僚のコニー・サックスは気難しくてあくの強い人物、をイメージしていたが、本作では２人とも穏やかなレデイだった。それもそうか、２人とも立派な出自をもち、名門オクスフォード大学を卒業しているのだから。
　スマイリーの宿敵カーラも登場する（「裏切りのサーカス」ではカーラは登場しない）。原作でスマイリーが、初対面のカーラの外見を「イタリアの田舎町で見かける聖職者のよう」と評しており、その表現に合う役作りがされていた。
　原作では、インドの刑務所でのスマイリーとカーラの対面から１５年以上が経過して、ジム・プリドーもカーラと会話しているが、残念ながらこのプリドーの回想シーンではカーラは映像化されていない。インドでの拘留生活から一転、権力の座に上り詰めたカーラは、どのような風貌になり、どんな話し方をするのか、ぜひ観てみたかった。

Diese 1979 entstandene Fernsehverfilmung des gleichnamigen Buches " Dame, König, As, Spion " von John le Carré führt in die Zeit des Kalten Krieges und hinter die Kulissen von Geheimdienstaktivitäten während der siebziger Jahre. Vieles kommt einem irgendwie vertraut, teilweise inzwischen aber auch schon merkwürdig fern und fremd vor. Unübersehbar, wie sehr sich die Welt und ihre politischen Machtgefüge seit dieser Zeit verändert haben.

Der Fernsehmehrteiler folgt fast minutiös dem Verlauf des Buches - was Stärke und Schwäche der Verfilmung gleichermaßen ausmacht. Der Plot ist klassisch zu nennen für einen Agentenroman: Der britische Geheimdienst ist auf höchster Ebene von einem Top-Agenten, der für die sowjetische Seite arbeitet, einem sogenannten Maulwurf, infiltriert. George Smiley, als hoher Beamter des Geheimdienstes seinerzeit in den Ruhestand zwangsversetzt, wird sozusagen "wieder aktiviert", um dem Rätsel und einigen Geheimnissen der Vergangenheit auf die Spur zu kommen. Auf diesem Weg folgt man Smiley auf gewundenen Pfaden und muss dabei ähnlich wie beim Buch Geduld und Konzentration aufbringen, um nicht den Überblick zu verlieren.

Als Zuschauer muss man sich auch auf ein gemächliches Erzähltempo und ein für heutige Verhältnisse ungewöhnlich weitgehendes Maß an Gewaltlosigkeit einstellen, das man bei Film- und Serienproduktionen dieses Genre inzwischen nicht mehr vorfindet. Die ersten beiden Teile der Serie dienen zunächst der Vorstellung der handelnden Personen sowie einer ausführlichen Einführung in die Gegebenheiten des Falls: Vorgeschichte, Hintergründe, frühere und spätere Begebenheiten im britischen Geheimdienst werden ausgiebig dargelegt und über weite Strecken nur verbal erörtert, sodass sich zunächst möglicherweise Langeweile und sogar Enttäuschung einstellen mag. Hierbei erweist sich jedoch nicht nur die Darlegungsweise als komplex, sondern sind es auch die im Focus von Smileys Ermittlung stehenden Geheimdienstoperationen Witchcraft und Testify und die daraus resultierenden Folgen. Konzentrierte Aufmerksamkeit ist somit erforderlich, um le Carrés Handlungsgefügen folgen zu können. Inhaltlichen Details wird viel Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet, der Zuschauer atmosphärisch und differenziert auf die vielschichtigen Sachverhalte eingestimmt.

Den Großteil des Vergnügens macht beim Anschauen nach wie vor der Darsteller der Hauptfigur, Alec Guinness, aus. Guinness machte sich während der einjährigen (!) Dreharbeiten zu dieser Miniserie die Figur des Smiley in einzigartiger Weise zu eigen, war dabei von seiner Darstellung zunächst selbst aber überhaupt nicht überzeugt. Während der bereits schon weit fortgeschrittenen Dreharbeiten versuchte er noch, den Regisseur John Irvin zu einer Umbesetzung seiner Rolle zu bewegen. Nach Inaugenscheinnahme der ersten Muster aber schrieb le Carré den sich zu dieser Zeit in Arbeit befindenden dritten Teil " Smiley's People " (" Agent in eigener Sache ") nach den von Guinness zum Ausdruck gebrachten Charakterzügen um. Danach sah er sich nicht mehr in der Lage, die Figur literarisch noch weiter zu entwickeln, da die von Guinness kreierte Filmfigur sich vor seine eigenen fiktionalen Vorstellungen von Smiley stellte, wie der Autor selbst bekannte. Im Bonusmaterial von "Smiley's People" weist le Carré daraufhin, wie viel Guinness von Smileys Charakter in sich selbst sah. Insoweit blieb "Smiley's People" sein letzter wirklicher Smiley-Roman. In " Der heimliche Gefährte. " ("The Secret Pilgrim") ließ er ihn 1990 nur noch einmal als Nebenfigur und Stichwortgeber wieder aufleben. Der zweite Teil, '' Eine Art Held '' (''The Honourable Schoolboy''), dessen Handlung vorwiegend in Indochina angesiedelt ist, blieb bei den vorliegenden Verfilmungen außen vor.

Alec Guinness, dieser unvergleichliche, wunderbar subtile Charakterschauspieler (1914 - 2000), zeichnete das Porträt eines erfahrenen Geheimdienstlers, der bei seinen privaten Ermittlungen bisweilen nicht nur auf die Häme und Geringschätzung ehemaliger Kollegen trifft, sondern auch die eines melancholischen Einzelgängers, der auf Schritt und Tritt mit der Vergangenheit wie auch mit der Erkenntnis konfrontiert wird, als Ehemann betrogen worden, zudem als Privatmann einsam und gescheitert zu sein. Guinness lässt den Zuschauer George Smiley beim Denken zusehen und dabei kleinste Details der Figur aufscheinen, belässt ihm gleichzeitig aber auch etwas unergründlich Sphinxhaftes, mit seinen dicken Brillengläsern einer weisen alten Eule gleich. Ein Vergnügen für Liebhaber der Romane von le Carré, aber vor allem ein Genuß für Fans von Alec Guinness, der den von ihm bis dahin gespielten großen Rollen mit der Figur des Smiley eine weitere hinzufügte und seine große Darstellungskunst einmal mehr unter Beweis stellte.

Schwerlich lässt sich diese Produktion, mit damaligen Ensemblemitgliedern des National Theatre in London, mit heutigen Sehgewohnheiten an dramaturgischen und ästhetischen Ansprüchen unserer Zeit messen. Auch sind gute Englischkenntnisse von Vorteil, um nicht zu sagen unabdingbar, da die Produktion nur einsprachig vorliegt und das sprachliche Niveau als anspruchsvoll anzusehen ist. Bei Bedarf kann und sollte man daher von den - ebenfalls nur englischsprachigen - Untertiteln Gebrauch machen. Auch reicht die Bildqualität hinsichtlich Farbsättigung und Bildschärfe bei weitem nicht an das Niveau heutiger Produktionen heran (schon gar nicht an HDTV oder Blu-ray), was sicher zum anachronistischen Charme beiträgt. Man muss akzeptieren oder zu schätzen wissen, dass das Bildmaterial nicht nachbearbeitet wurde.

Die Rechte für die deutsche Fassung des ersten Teils lagen seinerzeit beim ZDF. Diese ist nun in der Reihe (" Pidax Serien-Klassiker: Dame, König, As, Spion (Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy) "), 35 Jahre nach der Fernsehausstrahlung, veröffentlicht worden. Den Abschluss bildet der drei Jahre später entstandene Serienverfilmung " Smiley's People " (in Kürze in der Pidax Reihe ebenfalls auf Deutsch erhältlich), Für Interessierte an beiden Teilen: Es gibt diese auf Englisch auch als Double-Pack " Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy & Smiley's People ". Einen Vergleich zu Guinness' Darstellung bietet mittlerweile die 2011 entstandene Neuverfilmung in Spielfilmlänge " Dame König As Spion " mit Gary Oldman in der Hauptrolle wie auch " A Murder of Quality " von 1991, basierend auf le Carrés Roman " Ein Mord erster Klasse ", ein reiner Kriminalfall und in den sechziger Jahren angesiedelt, mit Denholm Elliott als Smiley.

1987 wurde, ebenfalls von der BBC, le Carrés stark (auto)biographisch gefärbter und ausgesprochen komplex gestalteter Roman '' Ein blendender Spion '' ('' A Perfect Spy '') ebenfalls als Miniserie, '' A Perfect Spy '', mit Peter Egan in der Hauptrolle verfilmt, die für meine Begriffe aber gegenüber den beiden Verfilmungen mit Guinness in qualitativer Hinsicht enorm abfällt. Da es aber schwierig ist, heutzutage noch auf eine Agentenserie zu treffen, die diesen Zeitraum umfasst sowie einen ähnlichen Stil und eine ebensolche Atmosphäre vermittelt, möchte ich hiermit noch auf die im deutschen Sprachraum weitgehend unbekannte Fernsehserie '' The Sandbaggers: The Complete Series '' (1978 - 1980) [UK Import] sowie die neuere Miniserie von 2014 " The Game " hinweisen.
