Welcome to the subreddit of the poet laureate of rock 'n' roll. The voice of the promise of the '60s counter-culture. The guy who forced folk into bed with rock. Who donned make-up in the '70s and disappeared into a haze of substance abuse. Who emerged to find Jesus. Who was written off as a has-been by the end of the '80s and who suddenly shifted gears, releasing some of the strongest music of his career beginning in the late '90s. Ladies and gentlemen — Columbia recording artist Bob Dylan!
Do you guys think that Time Out of Mind would be as critically lauded as it is now with the four outtakes included?
Or would it make the album feel more bloated?
I really like Dreamin’ of You. Think it would have made a good addition even if some of the lyrics were used in other songs.
I also like the alternate take of Can’t Wait better.
But at it stands, still probably my favorite Dylan record
It would have spilled over to a second CD, and it would have definitely felt bloated. Basically all brilliant, but it would have asked a lot of the general listener.
Don’t most of the outtakes have lyrics that got packed into the other songs instead? It’d be bizarre if they were also on the record
Red River Shore is great but doesn't quite fit the album tonally. Mississippi didn't really get where it needed to be (a masterpiece) with Lanois.
Dreamin' of You gets its best lyrics used in Standing in the Doorway. Same thing with Marchin' to the City -> Til I Fell in Love with You.
So I'd say to leave them all off.
from what I remember though some of the songs have similar elements or lyrics and were integrated into others so it wouldn't really make sense
I don't know if it needed the other three but it would have been nice to have Red River Shore, either on TOoM or LaT, like Mississippi. Then it would have the reputation it really deserves as one of his greatest songs, if not the best song he's made in his late period (Only Mississippi and a few other songs from Tempest and RoRW compete, for me)
I think the track list should have been
Love Sick
Standing in the Doorway
Trying to Get to Heaven
Not Dark Yet
Highlands
All killer, no filler; still longer than Nashville Skyline.
Are you serious?
Yes
To each their own. I would not like that tracklist though. The original TOOM is great, the 22 mix even better.
You aren't wrong but this ain't it 😂😂
Imagine if Ys by Joanna Newsom had 5 half-baked R&B songs added to the track list
That’s certifiably nuts imo… no Can’t Wait, til I fell in love with the you … those songs are kick a**
They would’ve been great on a bootleg series.
They would have been great on a record … oh wait they were
They drag down the excellent writing on the five true masterpieces. Dylan’s habit of having albums be half-substantial, half-filler-R&B was annoying from Time Out of Mind to Modern Times, but it was unnecessary on TOoM. There was enough material for a perfect LP without all the superfluous Tom Waits imitations.
