Molenaar Wins Silver; Sutton Earns Bronze

VARESE, Italy – Former California men's rowers Olav Molenaar ('22) and Joachim Sutton ('19) both medaled at the World Rowing Cup I in Varese, Italy this past weekend. Molenaar helped the Netherlands take home the silver medal in the men's eight and Sutton aided Denmark in earning the bronze in the men's pair. Current rowers Frederik Breuer, Gennaro di Mauro and Tim Roth also competed at the event.
 
Molenaar's team won the opening heat in 5:32.48 to qualify for the A final, where the Netherlands finished in second place in a time of 5:29.83 – only two seconds behind first place Great Britain.
 
Sutton and his team finished second in the opening heat in 6:31.92 and first in the repechage to claim one of two remaining spots in the A final, where Denmark finished in third place in a time of 6:21.85, just two seconds out of second place.
 
Breuer raced for Germany in the men's four. His team took second in the opening heat in 5:58.01 to advance to the A final, where he just missed out on the podium, finishing in fourth place in a time of 5:50.35 – less than one second behind third-place Netherlands.
 
Di Mauro competed in the men's single sculls for Italy and finished second in the opening heat to qualify for the quarterfinals. In that round, he finished in fourth place and missed the cut for the A/B final by less than one second. He won the C final in a time of 7:00.26.
 
Roth raced for Switzerland in the men's four. His team won its opening heat to qualify for the A final. In the final, his team finished in fifth place in a time of 5:50.45, just one-tenth of a second behind Breuer and Germany.
 
The World Rowing Cup II will take place in Lucerne, Switzerland, from May 24-26.
