Paul Jackson's rig on Thrust

Did you try flats on the bass? I was in the studio this weekend and recently put flats on my Geddy. Played through an early model V4-B and a vintage Bassman cab...

Sounded SOOO funky...and I'm not even in a funk band!

 

Most people do not realize that Paul Jackson's bass wasn't even plugged in. Herbie played all the bass parts with his left hand

I think where he plucks has a lot to do with his sound.

Good answer. I'm sure he'd still sound like PJ on my basses. One of the absolute greats.... now I need to go listen to some old Herbie!

I'm pretty sure he still lives in Japan. A keyboardist friend of mine worked with him last year and had a blast. At any rate, he has an interesting myspace page that shows some basses.

 

I think the tone is in his fingers and whatever amp it is that he uses. I can't tell exactly what it is from videos. Any help? Sounds very ... like a Gallien-Krueger when it's being pushed. No tweeter. Which is lovely to hear. Wonder how to get that tone on demand.

And to answer the original question, if I had to guess, I'd say he is recorded through a DI in that clip.

His tone sounded much better live givin the incredible amount of compression and limiting used to record in those days. Flats with the treble up.

One of my favorite videos ever, the two headed monster in full effect. One of the grooves got so good Mike actually looked at PJ and smiled.

 

Did we ever find out what the amp is he play(s/ed) through? Looks he was using the same amp in the aforementioned and much beloved "Good God Almighty That's Funky!" youtube video.



Is it acceptable that I enjoy listening to "Thrust" much more than "Headhunters"?

 

I saw "Mike Clarks Prescription Renewel" a few years back. Mike, PJ, Bill Summers, Larry Goldings on B-3, Fred Wesley on 'bone and a sax player whose name I don't remember. talk about a funk fest extrordinaire! I also saw pj w/ HH& Headhunters in the mid-70's--I vaguely recall Acoustic amplification. One of my all time favorites and major influence (although I couldn't and can't play anything like PJ!)

 

Saw the Headhunters live back in the seventies. PJ was using a Bose system.

 

paul is a fresh roundwound guy... flats and dead strings won't cut it.

along w/ the bose, it could have been an acoustic amp. i have read interviews where pj praises old acoustic amps, and have seen clips of him using them. don't know if it is what he had in the studio though... could have been direct.

he also plays really aggressively, diggin deep w/ his right hand and hammering hard w/ his left.

 

you sir, may well have a better memory than I!
