After missing the restaurant when our GPS sent us on a wild ride, we finally found it right on Rt. 17. The restaurant doesn't look like much from the outside, especially when the sign isn't lit. However, when we walked in, we were graciously greeted...and walked through a warren of private rooms with fireplaces, each decorated with pictures of horses. We were then introduced to the staff of four who would be taking care of us...we were just 4 people, so it was like having personal wait staff. The restaurant has the feel of an old style steak house in New York City, just with more space between tables. Great ambiance. My wife and I don't eat steak, but this place was highly recommended and the couple with us are major steak aficionados. We ordered fish dishes while they had steaks. All were excellent. At the end of the meal, the other couple said these were the best steaks they've had since moving to the coastal Carolinas. Service was excellent. None of us are dessert fans, so I can't comment on the desserts. Though it's an hour drive to get there, we'll be back with other friends who prefer steak. It's worth the drive.More

I have been coming to Myrtle Beach my whole life, and for the past few years, my family has started a new tradition of eating at Thoroughbreds Chophouse. We have been enjoying their delicious food and unique atmosphere for a few years now. Since it...is usually just the guys, we usually only sit at the bar and enjoy our meals while conversing with the friendly bartender. The hardest part about ordering food here is trying not to get the same things, as each meal I have had here has been delicious. From the coffee rubbed steak to the rack of lamb, each meal has its own unique flavors, and you can tell the meal has been designed with passion. My most recent visit to Thoroughbreds was for a special occasion. My wife and I were celebrating our second wedding anniversary and I wanted to take her somewhere special. I used the reservation signup online through the website on my phone from the beach. I don’t think I have ever made a reservation so easily in my life. When we got there, we were greeted by a friendly hostess and guided to a table that had a thoughtful card signed by the staff, which was accompanied by some pretty heart shaped table scatter. Our waiter that night was Bobby Williams and he helped guide us through what I can only describe as a trip through flavor town. He could tell we were having trouble deciding what to pick for our meal as we wanted a little bit of everything. He right out suggested that, if we were ok with it, he would pick our meal from the wine, the appetizers, the sides, and even our main course. He asked us a few questions and professionally picked the most amazing flurry of food that Thoroughbreds had to offer. There was scalloped potatoes, steak cooked to perfection, champaign, and the most beautifully paired wine. The bacon wrapped scallops and lobster made us feel like we were back on our honeymoon in Aruba. I'm not quite sure how, but we even managed to have room for a huge slice of chocolate cake. Obviously there was too much food to finish that night, so we had one of the best follow up lunches the next day. Thoroughbreds Chophouse is an absolute must stop if you are even near Myrtle Beach. The delicious food, and comfortable atmosphere, is completely matched by the staff’s welcoming attitude and passion for serving their customers. The staff and marvelous menu at Thoroughbreds make each visit unique and a moment to remember. I want to thank each and every one of you who made our night that night, and every visit I had before that, a pleasant experience. Keep up the hard work. We will be back soon!More

Breaking Up is Hard to Do We hadn’t been there for several months but on our last visit we noticed that it wasn’t as good as it had been; we’d hoped it had just been an off night but in retrospect I guess it was...really the beginning of the slide. For the last few years this place had been our go-to choice for special occasions but sadly, after tonight’s takeout meal, it’s not even in our “okay” category anymore. I ordered my usual crab cake, the best I’d ever tasted outside of Maryland, and not only was it not really lump crab as far as I could tell, it was dry and ho-hum. True, it was enormous, but who cares? It was mostly breadcrumbs whereas the previous version was smaller but almost pure crabmeat. My husband’s prime rib sandwich was very well done even though he’d told them that if it couldn’t be served rare he would order something different. The bread, which we used to gobble up with great delight and take home in a doggie bag, tasted like it came from Walmart, definitely not as promised. And the fancy sauces? Ketchup! French fries were good but again, so what? Yup, sad to say, we’re saying goodbye to one of the few really good restaurants that ever existed in Myrtle Beach. Too bad.More

A couple of years or so ago, we took our son and his wife to Thoroughbreds for a first class meal. That is exactly what we got. We both had the Chateaubriand for two which included all the sides. The portions were large and well...prepared. Service was exceptional. That is the way it was then. My niece and her husband wanted to go their for a special anniversary dinner. Everything started going wrong almost immediately. The waiter took our drink order and we had to wait a long time for that to arrive. We finally gave our order and we (two couples) ordered the Chateaubriand. Another waiter brought bread out for us but no small plates. He left before we could alert him. Someone came in and was bussing a table and we got their attention and got the bread plates. Later we needed to have our drinks refreshed and no waiter. He was too busy serving other people and even though he had to walk by our table when leaving the dining area I did not get his attention until I said "Excuse me but can you pay attention to this table also?". We got our drinks and later our food was brought to the table. The Chateaubriand was small although it was well prepared but the vegetable were an absolute disaster. We had the mashed potatoes and creamed spinach and there was barely a spoonful each in the small serving dish. Our mashed potatoes were not brought out and I had to ask twice for them. The portions of food served definitely was not commensurate with what we had to pay. The chef did come out and inquire about how dinner was but that was after the fact the servers knew we were totally displeased with the entire meal. That experience certainly spoiled a planned special event. I am in Myrtle Beach about 50% of the year and regard myself as a local. My niece and nephew spend a lot of time here in their condo. You can be assured we will not be going there againMore

We are locals. Ate there 6 years ago and it was amazing. Last January we ate there and it was underwhelming. Just ate there on September 8th, 2020 for my son’s send off to Clemson dinner. We arrived at 7:00, ordered everything upfront. No entrees...until 9:10pm. $51 filets were overcooked, and had to use water just to swallow it down. The grouper was like beef jerky. Frankly, I couldn’t tell that it was even fish. I didn’t speak to the manager that night because my sons would have been embarrassed, because I never complain. I called the next afternoon to speak to a manager. Ugh. Total waste of time. He put me on hold 5 times and when I was trying explain the situation he cut me off and asked for my name, phone number and explained multiple times that his name was Allen and that he is the only manager etc. He said he was going to meet with the owners the next day and would call me back to ensure that, as locals we’d return and love the food. Never got a call back. I wasn’t calling to come back, nor anything free from our $300 bill. Actually, when he said that I rolled my eyes because we fed the filets to our dog. Absolutely disgusting.More

We come here a couple of times a year usually for an event. I would give five stars but of late the quality of the food has not been as excellent as in the past although the service is still outstanding as ever. It is...pricey so one should expect greatness through out the experience. We alway love ordering the table side Caesar salad which is very authentic. The atmosphere is "gentleman's club" style with several different rooms and themes. The issue with our latest visit was my wife's lobster tails were broiled and overcooked and my ribeye was ordered medium rare and the part of the steak was fine but the last part was very rare and I have no idea how that is even possible. I guess we should have sent the food back but didn't and the bill was quite large considering the quality of the food. It was my understanding part of the kitchen crew was new so...More

Even taking the fact that it was Valentine’s Day into consideration, the service and food were only average at best. Service: We were served by the Tasmanian devil. Nice guy but service was excessively rushed and many of the little touches that make service special...were omitted. Probably a casualty of it being Valentines Day so understandable to some degree. Example: We enjoy having coffee with dessert. It wasn’t offered nor did we have time to ask for it. I would have had to tackle him to slow him down long enough to ask! Food: Best way to summarize is that nothing was memorable. Our appetizer was bacon-wrapped scallops. I had the “steak and cake” entree (filet and crab cake) and my wife the twin lobster tails. The appetizer was just OK. My steak was perfectly cooked and tender, but on the small side even for 6oz. Most restaurant food is over-salted/seasoned for my taste. I don’t think this steak had any salt whatsoever and only minimal seasoning. So little to no flavor. No béarnaise or other sauces offered. There’s a reason why Thoroughbreds has been in business for 30+ years. I just can’t figure out what it is. Sorry to be so blunt. If you portray your restaurant as a fine dining establishment, you must do better than this. Even, and maybe especially, on Valentines Day.More

We made this reservation from an article I had read about 10 best restaurants in Myrtle Beach, they are not on OpenTable. What a surprise! The writer had described this as an "old school" steakhouse and I guess in some ways it is, but that's...ok. Everything from the greeting, over the top service and the food made for an incredible evening. The lobster bisque was delicious and colossal shrimp was fresh and spot on. We shared the wedge salad which was served icy cold with the blue cheese dressing. We had the grouper en Crote which my husband said was cooked to perfection and my 6oz filet with au poive was prepared exactly as I had requested. You could almost cut with a fork. The sides of pommes Robucheon , soooo Good, onion petals and creamed spinach rounded out our meal. We ended the meal with tableside prepared New Orleans bananas foster with flourish and a smile from Alain. Tammy our server, took very good care of us joyfully exceeding our expectations. They have an extensive wine list and our Ruffino Ducale Chianti Classico was the right choice for our selections. Do not miss the chance to dine here to experience a beautifully prepared meal with great service and lots of care to ensure that everything was exactly as it should be. We celebrated our anniversary at Thoroughbreds when taking a long weekend in Myrtle Beach. The service and the food were excellent. The only things stopping it from being a 10/10 experience; the smallest ever cocktail glass for my Negroni (3 sips and it was gone),...the asparagus side was a bit limp and lightweight and the A/C may need a tune up as my wife (and I) thought it was very warm. Please note : My wife NEVER, let me repeat, NEVER complains a restaurant is too warm ! :O BUT, none of these issues significantly detracted from what was an excellent dining experience. We felt the prices accurately reflected the quality of food and service. My wifes filet mignon and my ribeye were perfectly prepared (Medium and Medium-Rare). The restaurant also took great care of my wifes food allergies. Would we return ? ABSOLUTELY !More

We went here last night to celebrate our last night at the beach and an upcoming birthday. I researched and read reviews before so I knew what to expect somewhat.. We started with two appetizers. Shared the French onion soup and the scallop appetizer. The...French onion soup may be the best I’ve ever had. Does have a tinge of sweetness from the Sherry. The scallops were perfectly prepared and crisp bacon on top of a butternut squash purée. Or 13-year-old is not a steak eater so she simply ordered the chicken fingers and fries and the chicken fingers were hand breaded and very tasty. For our entrée my wife chose the potato and crusted grouper and I had a 12 ounce prime rib medium rare. The prime rib was extremely tender and seem to be a very large cup for a 12 ounce cup. It was prepared perfectly medium rare. I like horseradish so had both raw horseradish and some of the creamy horseradish. My wife’s grouper was extremely tasty. The cream sauce did appear to go to one side of the plate so she had to mix it up to get all the flavor but it was a very large portion it was extremely tasty. We had a great interaction with Bobby who is the person who buys the wines for the restaurant. We normally lead to a Pinot noir from Willamette Valley when one of us is having red meat and the other seafood. We did not care for the Peno selections however and he steered us towards Eight Years In the Desert by Orin Swift. Was a little more expensive than we wanted to go but was a good pairing. Basically a Bordeaux blend but very drinkable right out of the bottle. After we finished our entrées we were fairly full and not really thinking about desserts. However Stacey are wonderful waitress showed us their bananas Foster made table side and we had to go for it. Again a very tasty treat. Finally a piece of raspberry covered cheesecake to celebrate her birthday was brought to us gratis. We like the experience so much we went ahead and booked my wife’s birthday on our return trip in December for New Year’s Eve. The attention they paid to us was tremendous and always attentive and our water glasses were never empty. The decor of the restaurant is old fashion Kentucky in my mind.
