      Critics Consensus

Judd Apatow definitely delivers funny and perceptive scenes in This is 40, even if they are buried in aimless self-indulgence.

Oscar K A few laughs here and there, but mainly just awful unnatural dialogue and even bad acting, which is surprising considering the talent they packed, hence I suspect bad writing or directing. Perhaps the script was just so over-worked that it becomes impossible to deliver those dialogues in a natural way, I don't know, and I can't explain it, I just know it when I see it. Essentially, it feels like actors reading lines back and forth, lines that was way more funny in the writers head than to everyone else. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/22/24 Full Review Quentin T Couldn't finish this it was so bad. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/19/24 Full Review Brian D 60%. Some genuine chuckles but overall just moderately funny. Some pretty outrageous moments. 1.5/5 rewatch Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/05/24 Full Review Jeff Very good. This idea of sneaking cupcakes is severely depressing to me. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/19/24 Full Review geezer R I just didn't like it. Oh, there were a few funny episodes, but mostly it was crass. Selfish people who only cared about themselves, lying, trying to be "cool".. in fact, the whole movie basically was "how cool is this" and none of it was cool. But it does reflect the general attitude of the American public about "do it and then ask for forgiveness later". Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/08/24 Full Review Hilife Health Care r Not my cup of tea. This movie mad no sense to me. The crude parts of which there were plenty were not entertaining. Bad writing, bad production and the poor actors could certainly not save it. Please do not waste your time. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/05/24 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online It's like if Knocked Up was instead titled This is 35, and This is 40 were chapter two. It's just redundant. Rated: C+ Sep 7, 2017 Full Review J. Hoberman Tablet This Is 40 is intermittently funny, frequently embarrassing and, at 134 minutes, quite a bit too long. May 5, 2016 Full Review Donald Clarke Irish Times It is, in its quieter way, more pointlessly indulgent than The Matrix Revolutions. Rated: 1/5 Feb 15, 2013 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson You either take it as 134 long minutes of sweet-hearted comedy with martial strife mixed in or vice versa, namely a two-hour-plus argument between Mommy and Daddy. Rated: 4/5 Sep 4, 2023 Full Review Danielle Solzman Solzy at the Movies Despite the funny moments in This Is 40, the running time and the parts that do not age well are not doing the film any favors as it turns ten years old.
