Product Description
Touching, compelling and original, Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her spins a brilliant tapestry of interwoven vignettes. Starring OscarÂ(r) winner* Holly Hunter, five-time OscarÂ(r) nominee** Glenn Close, Golden GlobeÂ(r) Winner Calista Flockhart ("Ally McBeal") and Golden GlobeÂ(r) nominees Cameron Diaz (Charlie's Angels), Amy Brenneman ("Judging Amy") and Kathy Baker ("Picket Fences"), this "really special film" ("Ebert & Roeper and the Movies") is an absolute "triumph" (Mirabella). In the heart of L.A., six extraordinary women have come to an emotional crossroads: a talented young detective (Brenneman) struggles with loneliness, an ambitious bank manager (Hunter) contemplates motherhood and a successful doctor (Close) confronts her spiritual emptiness. At the same time, a blind teacher (Diaz) searches for love, a middle-aged writer (Baker) grapples with prejudice and a gifted fortune-teller (Flockhart) grieves for her dying lover. Poised between fear and hope, each woman must weigh the choices she's madein order to meet the future unfolding before her.

- this story is definitely for those that like to see subtle but poignant writing/directing. This film is full of that.
-each character has their own experience and perspective, but brilliantly, in the end they correlate somehow
It's a nice little gem of a film that drama buffs will enjoy. Don't sleep on it. It'll pleasantly surprise you.
This movie is FANTASTIC!!! Do people need everything spelled out for them? Does the good guy have to shoot the bad guy just so you can keep up? Can you relax and understand something that's non linear?
Just watch their faces. You can tell what's going on internally by just watching their faces. This may be a surprise for some moviegoers, that not everything meaningful is spoken or acted out. It's a very tough test for an actor to be able to convey their world, their heart, their inner selves, and whatever changes they might be experiencing in subtle facial expression. I'll refer you to the last scene of "Michael Clayton" when Clooney is in the taxi. It's a virtuoso performance, especially because the camera stares at him for about 5 minutes.
Anyway, I've seen this movie twice and I like it even more. The entire cast was fantastic. Whoever played the homeless woman was spectacular.
This was an exposition of the brutality that rains down on women every day. From the boss lady to the homeless woman (the ultimate Invisible Person: an elderly, single, impoverished woman) we watch them trying to take deep breaths through the pain, and, so woman-like, still running the world.
Brava!
ADA law requires it - Broadcasters, cable companies, and satellite television service providers must provide closed captioning for 100% of all new, non-exempt, English language video programming. Closed captioning must also be provided for televised emergency information in some locations. These closed captioning requirements are enforced by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) under the authority of the Communications Act. See Television and Closed Captioning. The law is generally clear that government agencies must make their websites accessible.
The 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act (“CVAA”) expanded the scope of devices that must display captions under the Television Decoder Circuitry Act to all video devices that receive or display video programming transmitted simultaneously with sound, including those that can receive or display programming carried over the Internet. The NAD was a leading member of the Coalition of Organizations for Accessible Technology (“COAT”) which was instrumental in drafting and getting CVAA passed. See Internet Access and Broadband.
Glenn Close plays a divorced physician looking after her aged mother and looking for love.
Calista Flockart plays the tarot card reader for Close's character, and then we see her with her very ill partner. They are discussing and musing about their first date.
Holly Hunter plays a bank manager, having an affair with a married man. She becomes pregnant and we see her story.
Kathy Baker plays Rose, a mother if a teenaged son and a children's book writer. Looking but not looking for live, she meets her next door neighbor who is striking looking and quite available.
Amy Brennerman p'ays a detective who has put her life on hold while living with her sister, Cameron Diaz, who is blind. Interesting women, both of them.
Each story is within another story. This film is seventeen years old, but can still ring true.
