Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Chelsea are currently in negotiations with veteran Thiago Silva over a new deal at Stamford Bridge.

The defender is set to turn 39 years old in September, but he still has plenty to offer this Chelsea side.

This season he has started in 17 Premier League matches and has played more minutes than any other Chelsea player in the league.

He is valued highly at Chelsea by Graham Potter and Romano has provided the latest update on his contract situation.

The journalist told Caught Offside: “I’m told there are negotiations ongoing between Thiago Silva and Chelsea, it’s up to the player and his family to make final decision.

“Despite his age, I think Thiago in a top team is always a good idea, he has great leadership and quality, and still so much to offer at the highest level.”

Silva’s current deal at Stamford Bridge is set to expire at the end of the season. Given how much he has played this season, it is easy to see why they are keen on keeping him around.

Back in October Silva told reporters: “What I can tell you is that the most important thing for me now is to continue playing at a high level and helping the team achieve the best possible results.

“For sure there will be the time where we need to talk. It could be before the World Cup or after the World Cup.

“Of course I need to know whether I will have a new contract with Chelsea, also for my family arrangements. It is not easy if I don’t have a new contract – I will have to decide what to do.

“I must involve my family. This is an important decision and so we will see what will happen.”

Silva has already played 1,998 minutes of football this season for Chelsea across all competitions, which is especially impressive at his age.

Potter has been impressed with the defender since he joined the club back in September.

The manager told reporters: “I’ve only been here three, four weeks but already I’ve seen his quality.

“He’s an incredible person and incredible player. The level he can play at and the amount of respect he has throughout the game is incredible.

“All I can do is help him reach the best levels he can at the club. And the rest is something for him and the club to think about.

“He’s a leader, a top professional and a top person. And he’s a joy to work with.”
