Rezension aus Deutschland vom 4. Januar 2014
"There's a Dream I've been saving" ist das Motto des "Cowboy's" Lee in Sweden....

Hands down the best and nicest boxset in my collection . It deserves a Grammy for content, packaging and music. If only other artists handled it this way.

Whole Lotta Pop
Rezension aus dem Vereinigten Königreich vom 28. November 2013
The second half of this boxed set (discs 3 & 4) gives us an alternative history of post-psychedelic pop in which the unfamiliar names of The Kitchen Cinq, Hamilton Streetcar and Suzi Jane Hokum suddenly become the major chart acts of their time. For someone, like me, coming to this music fresh and with no expectations, it is strange to hear music of this quality collected all at once in one massive compilation: two and a half hours of technicolor daydreams with occasionally heavy hints of the classic Eurovision period that they would inspire. Much of it is derivative, of course, but it's cleverly arranged and, at this distance of time, there's a statute of limitations on musical theft.
(Note that if you buy the extra-deluxe version of this set, you get three DVD-ROMs with massively more of this material, a slipcase for the set and some other bits & pieces. I'm reviewing the standard set, but if you can afford it and you're a real collector of this stuff, the more lavish version is certainly very desirable.)
The explanation for the second half of the set comes on the first two discs, where producer, and singer-songwriter Lee Hazlewood is represented by his complete recordings for the label that carried his name. This isn't the complete Hazlewood (he recorded for other labels, and his work with Nancy Sinatra in particular is not represented here) but his classic albums Forty, Cowboy In Sweden, The Cowboy And The Lady & Requiem For An Almost Lady are all here, with other stray tracks.
All four of these Hazlewood albums are good in their own right. Requiem For An Almost Lady (all Hazlewood originals) is a bittersweet little song cycle, spare & ironic. Forty is a strong album of covers, including two Randy Newman songs and several standards. The Cowboy And The Lady, probably the weakest of this quartet, features Ann-Margret on a mixture of songs with a definite highlight being the version of "No Regrets". Last, and not least, Cowboy In Sweden is the partner volume to the quaint, one hour musical film of the same title, which is included here on the set's fifth disc, a DVD.
For most listeners, it will be Hazlewood's tracks that make this a required purchase: two and a half hours of a laconic, gently self-mocking singer who clearly enjoyed playing a role that can perhaps be described as "Johnny Cash at a love-in". His wryness and humour comes clearly through, and cuts down on what might otherwise have been a very cheesy set of material indeed.
Note that the production of this set is absolutely stellar. The LP-sized book is bound to archive standard, beautifully printed and contains a wealth of information about Hazlewood and the other acts here. Light In The Attic Records has done a stunning job with this set and although the physical item is considerably more pricey than the mp3 alternative, it really justifies the price, especially when you consider the inclusion of the Cowboy In Sweden DVD.
Overall, although the subject of this boxed set (part cult recording artist, part a journey through one of the more obscure byways of a pop era) may seem unpromising, this is a set that simply blows away some of this year's more prominent boxed set releases. If you can find the money for it, do.

Great, but....
Rezension aus den Vereinigten Staaten vom 31. Juli 2014
This box is worth its price even if you're a casual fan.
I would give it five stars if it wasn't for the fact Lee Hazlewood LP "Forty" is missing on the wav files dvd.
I found no mention of this omission on Amazon (or elsewhere) when I decided to buy it.
Yes, "Forty" is included as mp3s and It's possible that the buyer can piece together the complete wavs for "40" by ripping tracks from the 4 cds, but it's not the same thing, is it? Not when you've paid the extra $$ for the deluxe edition.
The Amazon seller is not to be blamed for this.
It seems Light In The Attic (the record company behind this release) offered a free download of the missing wav files for customers who ordered the box directly from them. Here's what LITA wrote in an email to the buyers in December 2013 (it was posted on a forum by a buyer):
-------
Hi,
There was an error in the production of Data Disc 2 of the deluxe version of the LHI box set. The disc mistakenly omitted the .WAV version of the Lee Hazlewood album Forty. We have set up a download link, which you may access here (10 songs, 354 MB total), that is the exact same file format and quality as what should've appeared on the disc.
Please note, this link is a .zip file and cannot be downloaded to an iPhone or iPad. Best to download to a standard computer and then sync with your favored device.
Best,
Light In The Attic
PS - For those of you who ordered the Standard Box, feel free to grab this link too, as I couldn't grab the email addesses of just people who ordered the Deluxe, so lucky you!
(end of email)
That offer should be extended to other buyers as well. The link provided by LITA in the e-mail no longer works. I sent them an email asking about this but so far I haven't gotten a reply.

Unpopular pop.
Rezension aus dem Vereinigten Königreich vom 23. Dezember 2013
Lee had been around since the 50s, a prolific songwriter, producer and recording artist who could turn his hand to any style. In 1965, he broke through internationally with 'These Boots Are Made For Walking' and the 'Nancy& Lee' album, which encouraged the record industry to bankroll the LHI label, which for five years released Lee's tears-in-my-beer country psych-pop albums together with a motley selection of LA pseudo-psychedelic acts and oddballs. None of which sold bugger all, and after which Lee went off to live in Sweden and sank quickly into obscurity. By 1985, the year that Sub Pop records first mooted rereleasing the LHI back catalogue, he was almost forgotten.
The appeal of this set, then, is hard to describe. It has been theorized that Lee, already 40 by the time LHI was formed, didn't quite grasp the new sounds, and it's this dysfunction between band's intentions and Lees autocratic management and production that make these records fascinating - really good pop records that were ,however, understandably not that popular - Gram Parsion's ISB aside, approximations of psychedelia, cod C&W and LA sunshine pop that never quite get there and are all the more interesting for it.
So, whilst it's difficult to claim Lee as an important or influential figure, and whilst a great deal of his work could fairly be described as throwaway, nevertheless this is five hours of delightful, off- kilter 60s pop, beautifully packaged and annotated.
What you get:
Hardback cloth bound 300x300 book, with photos and interviews
4x CDs. The four albums Lee recorded in the period and a selection of LHIs output. - 100 songs or so. (The deluxe version contains 400 songs)
Facsimile of Lee's LHI business card.
Flexidisc of studio banter.
DVD od 'Cowboy In Sweden' a sort of extended music video.
Definitely the nicest box set I've ever bought.

Labour of love
Rezension aus dem Vereinigten Königreich vom 28. November 2013
The fantastic Light In The Attic label has been on a roll lately with their perfect Lee Hazlewood re-releases, but this lavish book is a true labour of love. It contains four discs of which the first two collect all the material Hazlewood recorded for his own LHI records. This includes completely remastered versions of his legendary albums Cowboy In Sweden, Requiem For An Almost Lady, The Cowboy & The Lady and 40. I cherish the previous versions on the small Smells Like-label, but these versions right here are the way to go! These were mastered from the original tapes, so the sound is incredible. There are a couple of unreleased gems thrown in for good measure, but the fact you get these legendary albums sounding so good, is worth the price of this set alone.
The other two discs contain key tracks from LHI artists like Honey Ltd, International Submarine Band, Sanford Clark and many others. It gives a great overview of that magic little label and the fantastic and diverse music that was released in such a short period of time. The book it all arrives in is full of interviews and stories about Lee, his collaborators, his releases on LHI, other LHI artists (a few of those stories are familiar though) and lots of fantastic photo's. Oh, and did I mention the dvd? Cowboy In Sweden, Lee Hazlewood & director Torbjörn Axelman's awesomely weird collaboration for swedish tv is included. Fully remastered and looking very good indeed. Even the few performances from guestartists (George Baker Selection, Steve Rowland & The Family Dog) have been kept in.

Tender Lee
Rezension aus den Vereinigten Staaten vom 28. Mai 2021
This LHI Records box set has two CDs of Lee Hazlewood himself, two CDs of other artists who recorded for his label, and a DVD of the TV special "Cowboy in Sweden". LHI never really had any "hits", so it's likely that most people won't have heard much of the material here. A lot of the material is great, but not everything is (how could it be?). It's still a good purchase for a Lee Hazlewood fans, if you have the money to spend.
