Innovative & Entertaining!
Jay_Rusty25 May 2020
I highly recommend this movie; it's quick paced, well acted & directed; production values are really good, despite the low budget; gore and sfx are really top notch! It's a very lean, fast paced dystopian action movie, full of plot twists and expert direction & photography.

Nothing new, but unusual for where it's from
euroGary28 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
"Don't forget the standing ovation" joked director Ali F Mostafa as he introduced the world premiere of his film 'The Worthy' at the 2016 London Film Festival. He may not have received that, but there was definitely warm applause from the audience at the end of his dystopian thriller.

You've seen the basic plot in countless other films: a group of people hiding from the horrors of the outside world are picked off, one-by-one, by a hidden enemy. What makes this film different is it is from the United Arab Emirates: this reviewer tends to think of Arab films as mostly featuring villagers fretting about dried-up wells or similar - in short, unlikely to appeal to Western audiences outside of the filmsnob festival circuit. But the Saturday night multiplex crowd would find much to enjoy in this offering.

The film is very atmospheric: the survivors are holed-up in a derelict aircraft factory, which provides a pleasingly grim backdrop to the action. There are some inventive fatalities (death by water tower!) and the stock characters are all present and correct: handsome hero, feisty female, creepy bald loner... it is also nice to see Arab women given action heroine roles.

On a deeper level this works as a read-across to the real-life Middle East's experiences with the Taliban, Daesh, etc: self-important factions fight it out while ordinary citizens are caught in the middle. But it is also a thrill-a-minute ride with a good explanation for why the attackers do what they do: as the final survivor strides off into the sunset, I could not help but hope their story is continued in a sequel.

The Worthy is an unrestrained action-thriller and the first of its kind for Emirati cinema.
LloydBayer12 December 2016
Not long ago he charmed us with City of Life, an almost true to life depiction of life in Dubai. This time imminent Emirati director Ali F Mostafa grabs our attention with a premonition of what could happen in the not so distant future.

Set in a derelict dystopia where clean water has become a precious commodity (if it isn't already, time to wake up people!) The Worthy opens with a warning and in it a protruding message about the fate of humanity. The first fifteen minutes is also a warning that violence will be brutal, bloody, and at times extremely unforgiving. We are then introduced to about ten survivors living in an abandoned aircraft factory. They have a huge water tank but low on ammunition, thus making them sitting ducks for drifters. With the palette already dark and dusty, the arrival of two mysterious strangers escalates the film into a bottomless pit of spectacular chaos.

Shot mostly in a single location, what follows is a deadly game of cat-and-mouse where one by one, characters are picked-off in gruesome death traps. While the fates of these characters are somewhat predictable, why they are being killed forms the central message in the film. As such, it won't take long for viewers to realise that the theme on water scarcity is just the outer layer of this diabolical thriller that finds its footing in slasher territory. That the makers seem to have had free reign on death scenes is evident in violence that is almost on par with carnage in the Saw films. Even so, repetitiveness is kept to a minimum in favour of keeping the action grounded and beautifully choreographed.

With an ensemble cast and a credible script from horror writer Vikram Veet, The Worthy may feel familiar to the post-apocalyptic canon but it's still a commendable effort and a leap forward in Arab cinema. Like City of Life before (including actors from that film), The Worthy is built on a platform of philosophical ironies that many may not see at first. But it's there and waiting to be discovered, just like the emerging Arab film market. And judging from the applause at the end of this screening, it also shows that Emirati cinema can be distinctly Arabic and strangely alluring at the same time.

The film is good!
RodrigAndrisan13 February 2019
There are many films in this genre. But usually they are not good. This one is very well done, good acting, good direction, good everything. The film has tension from the beginning until the end. Nice surprise to see it was filmed in Bucharest (my birth city), with the contribution of many Romanians (crew and actors)(don't worry, I don't know any of them and I'm always objective, no matter what...) From 13 reviews already, only 5 are positive about the film, make abstraction of the 8 others, watch the film, it's... worthy!

Depressing, filled with redundant violence, yet intriguing
TimOuw15 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I gave this film a 6 because of it's beautiful cinematographics and the location where it is shot. I found the acting adequate and the film has some integrity. I also find Arabic a beautiful language and I understand some. The film was incredibly atmospheric and I don't regret the viewing. However, the plot is flawed and I don't like the conveyed message at all. On top of this it is packed with awful mistakes made by the characters and thus the director/writer. Let me elaborate.

The film starts with a truckdriver, who turns out to be the initial protagonist, giving a man a lift. A voiceover tells that this man is some kind of prophet or visionary. A feel of desolation and a post-apocalyptic setting is conveyed, which I love, and during the first ten minutes we are introduced to a group of people living in some sort of gated compound, an old destroyed factory, trying to survive the ordeal of a world where the water supply is contaminated. They are then visited by a drifter played by Ali Suliman, who also plays a Taliban member in 'Lone Survivor'. He holds a woman hostage with a chain attached to her, it is clear he uses her as some kind of bargaining tool. Under cover by his son with a scoped rifle with merely three bullets, the leader of the good guys opens the gate with the incentive to help the woman. He offers to give the drifter some gallons of water in exchange for the woman. However, during the negotiations the drifter slits her throat suddenly, awfully graphic on screen.

Why would the drifter do that? She dies for no reason. She is also the most beautyful woman in the film. Obviously she was his cover and bargaining tool. Or was he so desperate to get water in a frenzy? Would it not be better to just coöperate? He is covered by some dude in the back with a modern looking crossbow. The guy misses an arrow and gets shot by the good guy with the scoped rifle. Suddenly there is a third guy throwing a knife like a ninja hitting the drifters neck, one foot away from our good guy. He get's shot too, but only in his shoulder and it doesn't seem to do anything while it is 7.62 ammo. Yeah right. This third guy, named Mussa, explains he actually aimed for the drifter, which is totally inconceivable because the leader and the drifter where brawling. He could have hit any of the two. The leader of the group stays somewhat reluctant to trust Mussa, but his son insists he saved his fathers live and they need to be let in. And so it goes. Furthermore, nobody thinks of picking up the crossbow, while it is clearly a great asset for the group. Who writes this stuff? This is in the first ten minutes!

It is soon clear that the real acting performance is done by the bad guy Mussa, played by Samer Ismael, but he only appears for like 10 minutes in the entire film. A huge letdown! Mussa is accompanied by a girl, presumably his girlfriend or wife, but it is clear that she is really elusive and uncomfortable. For me it was apparent that she is not to be trusted and that they have a pact. She is introduced as being Kurdisch and doesn't speak Arabic and in that way she stays mysterious. We are introduced to the characters, sitting at a campfire. They all found refuge in an old plane factory and tell what they did in their former lives. I found them all likable but it is soon clear that they are all way to weak to survive in this harsh reality surrounded by crazy people. Inundated by surprise and naïvety, the leader of the group is stabbed to death by Mussa and a psychotic killing sequence is started what will fill most part of the film. It is, however, way to predictable.

The son is now the protagonist. People die in most horrible ways and it is all filmed quite clear. The guy Mussa destroys their water supply by rigging the water tower, killing one man and crippling another. The booby traps, made with makeshift grenades were unbelievable to me. The crippled guy, actually the best friend of the protagonist and the illicit lover of the protagonists sister, gets his leg amputated but we never hear from him again when they later leave to find another water supply. The whole sequence where his leg gets amputated is pointless. His character is not developed at all. On top of this, with the exception of a couple of shots, the characters never seemed thirsty, while that is the whole premise of the film.

We are confronted with a character who seemed like the more 'intelligent' person because he is shown while reading books, sitting by himself, but suddenly he starts to perform mutiny. He is then banished by the group, only to be found later in a basement, entangled in a strange and contrived trap where he is hanged by his wrists, his tongue removed and his shoes filled glass. Why would Mussa do that? Why go through all that ordeal to create traps like that, with no water and no real means to survive longer than a couple of days? The protagonist then KILLS the banished guy by suffocating him, ending his misery. Yet it seemed like a drastic measure and surprised me. It's a human being after all and his injuries were not lethal. While doing this they leave the hatch to the basement open while Mussa is at large. How stupid can you be? It's almost like they all deserved to die. Of course, Mussa closes the hatch, trapping them. Because of this another woman dies in agony while she is burned to death. This is where I had to look away, it was just too violent for no reason. The special effects were quite good but the violence is totally redundant.

The film moves to the finale where all the good guys but the protagonist and the sister of the protagonist are dead. And of course Mussa is lurking somewhere. The sister, Maryam, a driven and brave woman, is balancing on an old wing of a plane, another trap created by Mussa. When the wing tips over to one side she will be hanged. The rope around her neck is in fact barbed wire, adding to the horror of this film. The cable is way up in the air and you can't see the ceiling. How could Mussa create this trap in so little time? We get to see a balancing act while the boss fight takes place but Mussa is on the winning hand. Seeing this, the sister commits suicide. The whole trap is therefore pointless! It is anticlimactic in the worst sense! Mussa is then shot by a flare-gun and he burns to death. This time we see NOTHING as opposed to the horrible deaths of good, likable characters. Really?

So, in order to understand the point of this film you think: Oke, Mussa is just a psychopath, right? All his killing was senseless. After all, he destroyed their water tower deliberately so it wasn't power or water he was after.

It gets better! Or worse!

His elusive kurdish girl turns out to be some kind of superstrong special forces babe, suddenly hitting and overpowering the protagonist and telling the kicker: She and Mussa were both some kind of scouts for a group in Medina, trying to 'repair' mankind by killing off the weak persons. She literally says that. So they go trough all this ordeal to psychotically KILL all these likeable innocents because they are WEAK? I literally said out loud: I don't like this message at all... She then carves what appears to be their branding of some sort in his neck, telling him he needs to come to Medina to join their group: She let's him live because as far as she's concerned he is the strongest person deserving to live, WHILE UNDER HIS COMMAND EVERYBODY DIED??? Obviously I noticed all the religious names of the characters and the intended allegory but it all felt empty to me.

Then you think the film is finished but we witness the protagonist start his journey to Medina. He then 'coincidentally' meets the prophet we see in the beginning and the film tries to put some kind of symbolism and philosophical notions in the last minutes.

It fails. For me at least.

Resuming my rating: A generous and actually too high 6/10 because of great cinematography, good looking effects, a nice location, reasonable integrity from the actors and a nice palpable atmosphere. But in essence packed with flaws.

A horror movie with unrealistic ending
jose-216518 August 2020
The only problem of this movie is that it is a horror sci-fi movie, rather than a thriller. It's full of evil, blood, unsettling landscapes and unescapable misery. The ending is unrealistic.

Wherever it's from, it's bad
jjr-7647413 August 2021
I've seen reviews finding redeeming values to the movie because it comes from an unusual producing place. But it's like finding a movie should be saved because it does not come from Hollywood but from Wisconsin. It has nothing to do with the movie itself.

This movie just proves that UAE have got great cinematographers, and promising actors, let's give them time to groom good writers and decent directors. They were absent from this movie.

A movie that insists on its idiocy
nutsyjoe88 February 2018
Incredibly stupid decisions start driving the movie after the first 30 minutes. What's worse than a by-the-numbers plot? A script insisting that its characters are so stupid, it makes you wonder how they survived that long in the first place. Never mind whatever context or culture the story is supposed to exist in; this is as unworthy as movies can get.

Not exactly a must-see
vandeman-scott28 October 2020
THE WORTHY is the third movie I've seen from the UAE, and it's the best of the three. It was marginally watchable. I'm thinking it might have been one star better had the original performances been preserved rather than dubbed. In other words, the dubbing is awful. The subtitles don't match the dialog, either, which is distracting and odd.

There's really nothing new or special about this movie, and it's not well done enough to compensate for that. It's not the worst thing I've ever seen, but it's a far cry from good.

I can't recommend this movie, but watching won't kill you.

When will arabs leave Americans alone. I am a Muslim not only arabs the entire world want to talk walk look sh##t like Americans. But emirate? It's a rich country atleast if they decided to waste time and money on making movies they could have worked hard on it and not depend on hollywood dvd's. What we see in this is already done decades back in Hollywood movies. Except language nothing else is emirati here. Any ways not surprised can't expect arabs working hard. A big NO NO.

Unworthy

I'm a big fan of post apocalyptic themed movies/shows but find many are really bad. This being one. The story is very basic to the genre, but repeatedly situations completely unrealistic occur to keep the story moving.

A large amount of unneeded violence
hala-8250526 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
If you avoided seeing ISIS videos on internet, you will be forced to see it all in this movie. It has collected all the disgusting ways of killing in less than 100 minutes. And for no clear objective. All the main characters are named after prophets. Very brutal ways of murdering, the director meant to have some projections on reality but the ideas are all missed out, you never know what he is indicating for and why. It should be +35 and with warning: not for the faint-hearted. The effects are good at some areas of the movies but so funny at other areas example: when Mussa is shot. I would love to give it good review but really it disappointed me ad all my friends. It would be good if the new movies could talk to the minds rather than senses and emotions

Simple in everything
ahmadsayed-5265225 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I got why a lot the reviewer mention no idea, but it need some Arabian, culture to get it, the movie start with a warning from a people called black-flags , in arabian prophecies black flag is a group will show up at the end of days, some people will think them good other will think of them as evil

the plot using unfortunately very vivid symbols, by picking character names same as prophets name

Aisa = Jesus, Mariam = Marry, Dawood = David

The idea as per my understanding that the prophet appears at the end of era to correct the path of humanity, but the followers came after and twist their teaching to become racist

The symbol are vivid but the writer choose them carefully, following the historical and arabian interpretation to the Holly books

So westerns may miss the idea, overall the movie could be much better, but it is "Worthy ;) "

the Worthless
Don't see much of a point to this story honestly, I went into watching it not expecting much & well that's exactly what I got. Besides the fact that the plot (what there was of one) was subpar at best - the film itself just dragged on aimlessly & bleakly meandering along with no real sense of purpose or substance. I didn't get to the know any of the characters well enough to even care what happens to them therefore as the movie plods along I have zero connection to them or the peril they find themselves in. This is an empty tale with a nothing ending spun with no direction or proper pace.

No Story, Poor Performance, Not Entertaining

Warning: Spoilers
This is one of the worst movies I have ever watched as the movie has no story, and the actors performance was really awful in fact they were all fresh actors with no experience and it was extremely boring. The movie was entertaining at all and was time wasting. I do not recommend anyone to watch this movie as they will be wasting their money.

Comically bad. Nothing in this movie makes any sense. The characters have no real motivations. The plot is inconsistent. It's like monkey magic met saw but was set in a fictional land where everyone is severely cognitively impaired.

Never watch this movie not matter what!
sumayasyr26 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Very disappointing!! The movie is full of EXTREMELY violent scenes for no reason. I literally had to close my eyes several times even though I am a grownup (yet the movie description says +18) !! The trailer does not reflect the reality of the movie. When I watched the trailer it seemed to me like a Hollywood-type of movies that is done by Arabs at this time. But the reality was shocking. The quality is good however some of the scenes are just too funny and childish. The story of the movie meant to be very deep and philosophical, I believe, but neither me nor any of my three friends understood the point or the logic behind the movie. We were the only ones in the Cinema btw. The actors are named after the prophets for some reason or sign which we did not get. The is no ending for the story. The evil guy came were everyone is hiding and start killing them one by one in most disgusting awful ways and left one of them to live at the end (because he was the worthy). That's pretty much the full story. We suddenly found the light of the cinema turned on XD I truly do not think that the movie is WORTHY in all means.

engaysser14 April 2017
Useless movie and waste of time.. It has no idea with a very poor performance and poor editing with the use of poor video editing technics like all fire scenes. The voice is not clear at all even for Arabic language speakers. The accent of the actors was varying between Syrian Jordanian Iraqi and Emarati. With the use of unnecessary bad words.
