Giovanni Guareschi was born in 1908 in Fontanelle di Roccabianca in the Province of Parma. In 1925 his family succumbed to the economic depression under the fascist rule of Benito Mussolini, which meant that Giovanni had to leave the University of Parma without a degree and went to work in a sugar factory, a bicycle compound and variously as a sign painter and mandolin teacher. A break came after he began submitting cartoons to the satirical magazine Bertoldo and from 1936 he was the chief editor of Bertoldo. In 1943, after the Allies invaded Italy he was arrested by the Germans and incarcerated in prison camps in Poland, where he used his developing talents as journalist, writer, sketcher and cartoonist to become one of the 'animators' of the Italian Resistance. Among the partisans in the mountains, communists fought alongside monarchists, republicans and Catholics, burying their differences for the good of the people. Here unity, community, freedom over political ideology, individual responsibility, and a sense of belonging were the values that defeated fascism, and post-war became the values which inspired Guareschi's own weekly satirical magazine, Candido, and his fictional stories. The big political picture became, in microcosm, the Little World of Don Camillo, the particular tensions and need for unity transferring to the fictional Don Camillo and his natural enemy, Peppone, the Communist Mayor, while the voice of Guareschi's conscience became that of his third main character high up on the cross above the altar of the village church, forever surprising us mere mortals with his warmth and wisdom. There are now 9 new translations of his Don Camillo stories, with a 10th in the pipeline for 2023. A full biography of the author is printed in the latest edition of The Little World of Don Camillo.

I first read Giovanni Guareschi's The Little World of Don Camillo in about 1964, when it was part of a high school English curriculum with a leadership theme. The book is an enjoyable, earthy, and good-natured series of tales of the Catholic priest in an Italian village and the Communist mayor of the village, who is the priest's long-time friend and a life-long Catholic. It's an inspiring reminder, in today's polarized political climate, that it is fully possible to work with political rivals, provided you are committed to seeing them as good people who just happen to see things from a different perspective. I was recently reminded of the book when I encountered the practice of spiritual colloquy, because Don Camillo engages in colloquies with Christ throughout the book. Recommended for readers with an open mind.

At first blush this seemed pricey, but I'm a big Don Camillo fan and sprung for a used copy. I was NOT disappointed (unlike one of the other reviewers). I received a heavy, nicely bound, attractive (red leatherette w/ gilt) volume of "The World of Don Camillo", containing the complete text of five of the major Don Camillo books on heavy bright white paper. The purchase turned out to not be pricey, but rather a bargain.

Make sure you are getting the correct edition, as listed . . . but if you are a big-time Don Camillo fan, don't cheat yourself out of having this one on your bookshelf.

Captures the push pull of having to tend to even those "Communists" in the flock who make up the colorful landscape of parish life. And Don Camillo, contrary to the stereotype of the saintly, displays that approachable humor that comprises the relationship one often has in a deep relationship with one's Creator. Funny!

To fully appreciate the Little World of Don Camillo you have to realize that we are talking about postwar Italy, where the Christian Democrats and the Communists hated each other; you also have to realize that Don Camillo and Peppone are from the same small town, went to the same school, and fought a common foe during World War II. There are forces that divide them, and also forces that unite them. It is a wonderful book, because it describes the Italian national character and universal human nature.

I discovered 'the little world of don camillo' on my parents' bookshelf many years ago and was entranced at a young age at the series of short stories about a priest in a small Italian town who talks directly to God (the conversations are beautifully observed), and who is not afraid to bend the rules where he must to get things done. He is pitted against Peppone, the communist mayor and his cronies, and the tales of their constant jousting are an absolute joy to read. I never tire of going back to these stories as the observations and lessons in them are just as fresh today as when they were written 50 years ago, but have struggled to find more books in the series for sale, so was really pleased to be able to buy an omnibus with five of them in it - equally pleasing to find a seller who was absolutely spot on with the book's description and condition and who delivered very quickly.
