The Woodentops are a national treasure. Propelled into the arena by John Peel in the early 1980’s and furthered by Rough Trade they produced a slew of high energy singles that leapt out of the radio.

One of the stand out albums of the period, Giant, led to one of the best live Lp’s of all time ‘Hypnobeat Live’. A cut from this album ‘Why Why Why' is the principle crossover anthem of the second summer of love that brought the club movement of the late eighties.

David Bowie, a big fan of the band booked them to support, Prince tried, the Smiths threw them off their tour for being just too dangerous.

Its an incredible journey that has a bag full of little victories but no one mega hit that has dampened the joy of creation, as is usually the case. The fun is intact and the ideas varied and immediately likeable.

The Woodentops are proper, as time has proven and they 100% rock the house.

Woodenfoot Cops On The Highway. 1988

The Second Studio album on Rough Trade Records, this time in conjunction with Columbia Records USA.

Produced by Scott Litt and Rolo McGinty the album includes alongside The Woodentops musicians, appearances by Bernie Worrell, Gary Lucas, Doug Wimbish, June Miles Kingston and a surprise visit from Lee Scratch Perry. It was he that inspired the album title.

The music is a technological dance between the computerised and the human, bolt tight and live performances locked in. Wheels Turning, Stop This car, Maybe It Won’t last or In A Dream, being classic examples. For many it was the entry point to the Woodentops as the band now played bigger venues and further afield, since the previous releases.

Stop This Car and Wheels Turning remixes hit the clubs in Europe and USA just at the beginnings of the balearic movement in UK, in which the band was included. You Make Me Feel was the radio single in Uk and USA, Wheels Turning became the European hit and MTV regular.

The artwork is another iconic hand-made and photographed image, by regular artist Panni Bharti.

The album has never been performed as a whole, some titles very rarely.
