A 10-membergolf delegation comprising seven youngsters is in South Africa, competing in the All Africa Junior Team Championship (AAJTC) which teed off on Sunday in Johannesburg.
The seven are Bertha Sagwirika, Ireen Matias, Farida Austin (girls), Chrispin Kadzera, Dave Banda, Dalitso Chikho and Andrew Patrick.
Coach Victor Kachepatsonga is in charge of the squad while Golf Union of Malawi (GUoM) members Mercy Kachimanga and James Katunga have also travelled with the team.
GUoM President Gift Chidya Gondwe said they have assembled a good team after holding tournaments at clubs in the country.
“We are excited with the players that have made it into the squad. We also salute all the clubs that helped prepare the junior golfers to participate in the qualifiers,” Gondwe said.
Gondwe said the AAJTC is a good platform for youngsters to gain international exposure.
According to the organisers, boys’ teams are a maximum of four players and girls’ teams have a maximum of three players, all born after June 21 2005 to be eligible to compete.
“The format is 72 holes of stroke play with 18 holes played on each of four competition days. For the boys, the best three scores out of four will count towards the team score whilst for the girls it will be the best two scores out of three that will count.
“The team with the lowest aggregate score over the 72 holes will be the winning team,” the statement reads.
An outstanding youngster will be selected to compete in Scotland later in the year.
