- Summary
- In 1913, the first truly national controversy about the preservation and/or use of wilderness gripped the country: should Hetch-Hetchy, a valley within Yosemite National Park, be dammed and flooded to form a reservoir for San Francisco? This documentary explores this seminal chapter in American environmental politics while tracing the lives and divergent paths of the two national figures at odds in the debate : Gifford Pinchot, the first Chief of the U.S. Forest Service, and naturalist John Muir, the founder of the Sierra Club. Combining archival footage with stunning cinematography shot on location in Yosemite, this film brings to life an important moment in 20th century American history and provides a context for understanding the environmental issues that are again at the forefront of America's - and the world's - political concerns.
