Ferociously ambitious, The Widow boasts Kate Beckinsale's killer action chops but goes astray in a jungle of problematic tropes and unsatisfying twists.

paul m An expensive production and cast fail to rescue a convoluted, implausible, pretentious jumble of cliched story lines. Instead of telling a simple, coherent story they have thrown every cliched twist and turn imaginable in a vain attempt to create interest and suspense that ends up just being ridiculous. Beckinsale's character doesn't work but how could it with such an illogical mish mash of a story? Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/03/24 Full Review Audience Member Thought I'd binge watch the series as synopsis read interesting, BIG mistake..mainly due to Kate Beckinsales lack of believability and well, acting skills! Story had good bones but lacked cohesion. 😞 Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member I freaking LOVE this show and is a crying shame they get you started on such a good show then just stop producing it. We seriously need a season 2 and asap! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member This a rather plodding story spread over eight episodes and I I am honest my mind did wander from time to time. However Kate Beckinsale gave a pretty reliable performance and I enjoyed the Congonese scenery. This series reminded me of Austrian Emperor Joseph II's famous criticism of Mozart's music, i.e. too many notes. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member I thought the first season was excellent. I watched almost every minute of it. Sorry but I watch on my computer and I have that right arrow key that fasts forwards Netflix, so there was some of that. What I was really surprised about was Kate Beckinsale. I'd never paid much attention to Ms Beckinsale. I'd seen her modeling pictures, and a couple of her other movies but I never really looked at her acting closely. But I did in this movie and her acting is really very good. She delivered an amazing job of acting on this movie and while I was watching I paid close attention to her small moves and facial expressions and I was very impressed. I'll be watching more movies she is in. A great actress. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Excellent series. Well shot and characters are multi-faceted. No happy ending here but hope for most characters is present. Kate Beckensale carries the film with wonderful supporting actors. Beckensale overcomes unbelievable obstacles. Brad Newsome Sydney Morning Herald Writers Harry and Jack Williams really know how to craft transnational dramas built on crime and grief, but once things hit the Congo there's an odd languor about proceedings. Jul 8, 2019 Full Review Giles Smith Times (UK) [The writers] are, at the very least, on familiar ground here. And they know how to bang a vertiginous cliffhanger on to the end of each episode to keep you going. Apr 15, 2019 Full Review Carol Midgley Times (UK) The premise is decent...However, the Williams brothers, who wrote it, risk viewer apathy by overcomplication and thin characterisation. Rated: 3/5 Apr 9, 2019 Full Review Joanne Laurier World Socialist Web Site ...The Widow had the chance to take a strong stand on these questions, which are well-publicized, but did not. Aug 5, 2020 Full Review Camilla Long Sunday Times (UK) I found no evidence in Beckinsale's performance that she wasn't anything but maddeningly distant and fey. Apr 16, 2019 Full Review Euan Ferguson Observer (UK) If I was being particularly cruel - oh, do let's go on - I'd say this is Congo as Boden catalogue accessory.
