The Whisper in the Gloom (The Nigel Strangeways Mysteries) Tapa blanda – 19 Enero 2018

Strangeways must track down a young boy who may hold a clue to an international conspiracy.

You can’t keep Strangeways out of mischief...

On a fine August day in Kensington Garden, Bert Hale is anxious to test out his toy boat, a police informant is running for his life, and Nigel Strangeways is out for a stroll.

By the Round Pond, blood seeps into the water, a young boy flees with a note, and a private investigator is left bewildered.

Meanwhile, Scotland Yard is on high alert. A Soviet delegation is on its way to London and officers are working round the clock to prevent a high-profile assassination. But their staff is running thin as an untimely crime wave washes over London.

As the police attempt to place the incident in the park amidst the rash of crimes, it soon becomes clear that Bert holds the only clue to solving an international conspiracy.

Can Strangeways track down Bert before it’s too late?

The Whisper in the Gloom was first published in 1954.

Nicholas Blake was the pseudonym of Poet Laureate Cecil Day-Lewis, who was born in County Laois, Ireland, in 1904 and raised in London after his mother’s death in 1906. He was educated at Sherborne School and Wadham College, Oxford, from which he graduated in 1927. Blake initially worked as a teacher to supplement his income from his poetry writing and he published his first Nigel Strangeways novel, A Question of Proof, in 1935. Blake went on to write a further nineteen crime novels, all but four of which featured Nigel Strangeways, as well as numerous poetry collections and translations.

During the Second World War he worked as a publications editor in the Ministry of Information, which he used as the basis for the Ministry of Morale in Minute for Murder, and after the war he joined the publishers Chatto & Windus as an editor and director. He was appointed Poet Laureate in 1968 and died in 1972 at the home of his friend, the writer Kingsley Amis.

A beautifully written short thriller, lovable as much for its prose as for the characterization. The plot is less complicated than other thrillers from Nicholas Blake, but it opens almost stunningly and moves on briskly. It's a gentle, refined thriller of a bygone age when the detective, or even the police worked against odds that are unimaginable today. It's humour and literary allusions are an added bonus.

Nerve stretching plot but hated the American spelling and the vast number of mistakes. The author deserves a better presentation.

1.0 de 5 estrellas AN INSULT TO THE IMPECCABLE ENGLISH OF CECIL DAY-LEWIS
Calificado en el Reino Unido el 21 de julio de 2015
Nicholas Blake was the pseudonym of the writer and poet, and Poet Laureate, Cecil Day-Lewis. Although born in Ireland he was educated and lived all his adult life in England. He went to public school and Wadham College Oxford and before becoming a full-time writer he was an English teacher in a school. His written English was, of course, impeccable and of the highest possible standard. The way this book has been prepared for publication is absolutely appalling. It is full of American spellings: meager, theater, jewelry for just three out of many examples. The word "kidnapped", which appears frequently, is spelled "kidnaped" every single time. There are other misprints. Cecil Day-Lewis would be turning in his grave if he were able to read this travesty of his novel. Random House should be ashamed of themselves. I will be consigning my copy to the recycling bin.
