David Oyelowo, the actor who rose to fame playing Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma, makes his directorial debut with The Water Man, out today. In addition to directing, Oyewolo stars in the film, which also features Rosario Dawson, Alfred Molina, and Lonnie Chavis, who may be best known for playing the younger version of Sterling K. Brown’s character Randall on This Is Us. (Oh, and it certainly can’t hurt that one of the film’s executive producers is Oprah Winfrey. She and Oyewolo have been cultivating the project together since 2015.)

WHAT IS THE WATER MAN ABOUT?

The Water Man is about a journey that young, book-loving Gunner (Chavis) embarks on with the hopes of saving his leukemia-stricken mother, played by Dawson. When Gunner, who spends his free time consuming fiction, mystery, and magic, hears of a local legend, a magical being named Water Man who has healing powers, he and his new friend Jo (played by Amiah Miller) head into the woods to find him. Oyelowo plays Amos, Gunner’s father who is also struggling to come to terms with his wife’s illness, but rather than seeking out fantasy and adventure as a way to cope with imminent death, he feels despair.
