The War Game was made for the BBC in 1965, but not broadcast at the time. It is a docudrama based upon a supposed nuclear attack on the south east of England. It was written and produced by Peter Watkins with commentary by Dick Graham and Michael Aspel.

the war game
I saw a lot of this being filmed at the old Grand Shaft Barracks in Dover when I was about 10 years old.The film was never on general release , but it was shown in my school ( Astor Secondary School Dover) It's just as scary now I'm 68 and the loons are playing war games again.

Changed me
Although its depiction is probably dated in this era of smart bombs and murder by drone, this film, shown in one of my classes in college by a genius of a professor (we also read John Fowles' The Magus), this film will still move you and make realize the madness of war on any level.

I was there and part of this film
As a member of the local theatre club, I was asked to be an extra in this film and appeared as a burned corpse in many scenes. Watching it now still gives me chills and it has stood the test of time. A fine work by Peter Watkins, it was shelved after the first viewing in London, where I was a guest. The BBC thought it was too realistic and would scare people. I even have a signed letter from the director telling me the film has reviewed a good reception and he is hoping to see it aired on TV.

The BBC is the Best at Gloom and Doom
The two best nuclear war movies of all time are this one and Threads, about 20 years apart. Period.
