The Vagrant (The Vagrant Trilogy) Paperback – May 10, 2016
Purchase options and add-ons
The Vagrant is his name. He has no other.
Years have passed since humanity’s destruction emerged from the Breach.
Friendless and alone he walks across a desolate, war-torn landscape.
As each day passes the world tumbles further into depravity, bent and twisted by the new order, corrupted by the Usurper, the enemy, and his infernal horde.
His purpose is to reach the Shining City, last bastion of the human race, and deliver the only weapon that may make a difference in the ongoing war.
What little hope remains is dying. Abandoned by its leader, The Seven, and its heroes, The Seraph Knights, the last defences of a once great civilisation are crumbling into dust.
But the Shining City is far away and the world is a very dangerous place.

Review
★★★★★ 'For fans of classic science-fiction literature, this is a must-read.' – SciFi Now
★★★★ 'Come visit this brilliantly imaginative land of winged swords and broken solar cells.' – SFX
‘The Vagrant is a joy to read: an original and engrossing world, a strong story and a protagonist who is intensely charismatic despite – or because of – his silence. Newman’s debut is written with confidence, flair and imagination, bringing his dark world to marvellously macabre life’
Adrian Tchaikovsky, Author of Shadows of the Apt series
‘A stunning and ambitious debut novel set in a unique and imaginative world where the only hope rests on the capacity of human beings to love’ Melinda M. Snodgrass

Honestly I think the middling rating this book has is because it is so different than most other offerings in the genre. It is suspense, rather than fight driven. The fights themselves are short, very desperate, and usually only occur because escape failed. If you're looking for a valiant prince/warrior/whatever saves the day every time, this isn't for you.
All in all it's a great read, I'm looking forward to the next book, but won't buy it now--I'll just screw up my sleep during the work week! My only complaint is that the ending is less of a climax and more of a setup for the next in the series.
The author portrays the Vagrant as a likeable character, due to his mysterious nature and his actions that make him seem like a vigilante. The Vagrant will fight monsters with the sword and he defeats them with relative ease, yet he still takes caution and only fights if he has to. One cannot necessarily identify with the Vagrant because the story gives very little background on him, and the reader can only infer what his life was like before the story. It was easy to picture the Vagrant because the book’s cover is a drawing of him and the story gives a perfect description of him in the beginning.
The book had a significantly strange flow to the way it was written. It became difficult for me to follow the story at times, sometimes getting lost and having to backtrack. The story would also cut between the past and the present as well as the protagonist and the antagonist’s perspectives. For example, the story goes from the Vagrant’s perspective,”His hand grasps the sword’s hilt, eager to respond,” right to the antagonist’s perspective, “The sixth Knight of Jade and Ash returns, joining the others in the darkness.” I would read over one word sometimes and the whole page wouldn’t make sense until I looked back and found that word. This would happen more frequently than I would like, and it interfered with my reading experience throughout the story. This may discourage some readers from continuing to read the book, and they wouldn’t be able to experience this fantastic story.
All of the side characters seemed extremely believable and actually had more backstory than the main character. These stories make the side characters feel more alive and active in the story, while the author still somehow focuses on the Vagrant being the main protagonist. Some of the side characters die off, so I felt less attached to them as I did with the Vagrant, because he stays with us from beginning to end. These characters help set up the environment around the Vagrant and help the reader understand the setting of the story better.
Overall, this story was a fantastic read for me. Even though I would get lost at times, I would still feel immersed in the story once I found my spot. Its environment was enthralling and fascinating, holding my attention to keep me reading. I would highly recommend this book to my classmates and friends.

Do Not Pay more than 300 Rupees for Paperback. The print is like pirated book, the pages are almost yellow. And the book is not the big.
All those questions travelled my mind during the vagrant's journey and its unexpected conclusion.
What I liked most is that the author does not explain everything. It might sound silly but it's nice to be able to imagine parts of the story and just immerse yourself in this weird and twisted kingdom.
Through very nicely handled flashbacks you can see his history and what brought him there.
I won't go through a detailed summary of the book but I strongly recommend it and in fact I bought the second one right after I finished it.
