WWE SmackDown results, recap, grades: The Usos make history, Survivor Series WarGames takes shape

The Usos will officially become the longest-reigning tag team champions in WWE history by the time Monday Night Raw rolls around. Jey Uso and Jimmy Uso turned back the New Day on Friday's episode of SmackDown and now look ahead to Survivor Series WarGames.

New Day held the record for the longest tag team title reign in WWE history courtesy of a 483-day run as Raw tag team champions. Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods fought feverishly to defend their group's record and wrestle away the undisputed tag team championships from The Usos on Friday. Kingston and Woods fell short in their pursuit as The Usos elevate to the level of their cousin Roman Reigns, the longest reigning universal champion in history.

The latest presentation of the blue brand also featured two opening round matches in the SmackDown World Cup with a shot at Gunther's intercontinental title on the line. A new challenger for SmackDown women's champion Ronda Rousey was also decided.

The Usos usurp the New Day and The Bloodline has a war on its hands

The Usos and New Day were both defending champions in their own unique ways. Jey and Jimmy made their walks to the ring as the undisputed WWE tag team champions. New Day, despite being the challengers, were defending their status as the longest-reigning tag team champions in WWE history. The Usos have held the SmackDown tag team championships for 481 days, dating back to their victory over Rey and Dominik Mysterio at 2021's WWE Money in the Bank. A victory over New Day would clear their path to break New Day's 483-day reign by Monday.

Undisputed WWE tag team championship – The Usos (Jey and Jimmy) def. New Day (Woods and Kingston) via pinfall after catching Kingston off mid-air with a 1-D. Woods knocked The Usos ringside and Kingston laid them out with a picturesque trust fall. The Usos managed to isolate Kingston from Woods with dirty tactics behind the referee's back and tag team moves. Kingston finally tagged Woods in following an extended beat down and Woods went to work. He planted Jey with a tilt-a-whirl Russian leg sweep and impaled Jimmy with a gut buster. A combination attack by New Day, punctuated by a top rope leg drop, nearly earned them a pinfall on Jimmy. Kingston rolled up Jey shortly after with a deep S.O.S. but Jey also kicked out. The Usos appeared to have the match won with a double splash; yet, a defiant Woods endured. A Midnight Hour to Jey on the outside appeared decisive, but Jey somehow broke the pinfall in time. The two teams stared each other down as the crowd erupted in applause. The match came to an end after Jey laid out Woods ringside and the defending champions caught Kingston mid-air with a 1-D.

Undisputed WWE universal champion Reigns, the leader of The Bloodline, embraced his cousins backstage and told them this was how it felt to be the greatest of all time. 

The Bloodline, absent Sami Zayn, addressed the Indianapolis crowd to close out the show. Special counsel Heyman praised The Usos' performance, stating that no tag team can hold a candle to them. Enter the Brawling Brutes. Butch and Ridge Holland, fresh off a failed bid for the tag titles at Crown Jewel, interrupted WWE's predominant faction. Joining them was a returning Sheamus, who had storyline suffered an injury at the hands of The Bloodline. The trio lived up to their name, storming the ring and scuffling with their rivals. The Bloodline's man advantage was too much for the Brawling Brutes to overcome. Fortunately, Sheamus' longtime frenemy Drew McIntyre evened out the playing field. SmackDown closed with the ongoing skirmish.

The Usos and New Day worked hard to make Friday's match feel special. Their efforts were successful to some degree but the short-build and overall staleness of their rivalry (this is their 18th televised match to date) limited its potential. The right team won and that is what matters most. The Bloodline are a historic faction in WWE. Jimmy and Jey will stand alone as record holders by Monday alongside Reigns. WWE also teased the main event of Survivor Series: a WarGames match pitting The Bloodline against Brawling Brutes and Drew McIntyre. That should be a hard-hitting match, made even better if WWE adds Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens to the lineup. Grade: B+

• SmackDown World Cup (Round 1) – Santos Escobar def. Shinsuke Nakamura via pinfall after planting Nakamura with a Phantom Driver set-up by Legado Del Fantasma's distractions. He advances to the semifinals of the tournament.
• Bray Wyatt floored LA Knight with a headbutt backstage after Knight got loud and in Wyatt's face.
  
• Shotzi def. Lacey Evans, Liv Morgan, Sonya Deville, Raquel Rodriguez and Xia Li via pinfall in a Six-Pack Challenge No. 1 contender's match after hitting Never Wake Up on Evans. Shotzi will face Ronda Rousey for the SmackDown women's title at Survivor Series.
• Shayna Bazler choked out Shotzi backstage while Ronda Rousey taunted the challenger. A romance storyline involving Emma and Madcap Moss was also teased.
• Gunther told Ricochet he hopes the latter wins the World Cup so that Gunther can once again mop the floor with Ricochet.
• SmackDown World Cup (Round 1) – Braun Strowman def. Jinder Mahal via pinfall after landing his trademark running power slam.
• Viking Raiders and a returning Sarah Logan laid out Hit Row and Legado del Fantasma, nixing a planned match between Zelina Vega and B-Fab.
