      Critics Consensus

Led by a stellar Denzel Washington, The Tragedy of Macbeth strips the classic story down to its visual and narrative essentials.

      Audience Consensus

Although The Tragedy of Macbeth may not really add anything new to the long list of Shakespeare adaptations, it's visually striking and the cast is terrific.

Grace The acting and cinematography was above excellent which is 'nuff said. All of the actors were, as expected, just beyond good. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because I had a hard time following just because it's Shakespeare and I'm not great with it fortunately I was able to follow along on my phone (I know) the plot line and some of the key scenes/lines to understand (the theater was near empty and I used low light so it did not bother anyone). Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/28/22 Full Review Mary McDormand, Washington, Black and White, special effects Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/28/22 Full Review David Although maybe not a movie for mainstream audiences, if you like arthouse film, The Tragedy of MacBeth is a must see. Besides a slightly slow start, the film is gripping. Denzel is fantastic as MacBeth, being one of the only actors to be able to enforce the authority required for the role. The production design is fascinating. It feels very hypnotic, giving the film a surrealist feel rather than a realistic one, which is benefitted by how the film is lit and framed. Overall, it is a little disappointing to have had Ethan Coen retiring from filmmaking, but Joel can still knock it out of the park. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/15/22 Full Review Tiffany H Love the cinematography and acting but the language was quite hard to understand and follow Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/14/22 Full Review LOIDA R The movie is written in the way of typical Shakespeare's play. I enjoyed the movie. A fan of Shakespeare's work would enjoy the movie. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/22 Full Review Shirley Ann Effects were terrific! Adam Kempenaar Filmspotting Everyone exists in this ominous otherworld that feels so appropriate for characters who are caught between film and theater, ambition and loyalty, insanity and sanity, humanity and inhumanity. Rated: 4/5 Feb 10, 2022 Full Review Moira MacDonald Seattle Times It's not exactly cheerful holiday viewing, but this "Macbeth" is nonetheless a gift. Rated: 3.5/4 Jan 31, 2022 Full Review Simran Hans Observer (UK) The film has a cold, abstract beauty. Rated: 3/5 Jan 31, 2022 Full Review Zach Pope Zach Pope Reviews Coen’s direction at times puts you into a mesmerizing gaze that never lets up. Denzel should be in contention for Best Actor but overall I’m not a #Shakespeare fan & was hoping for something a little more unique Jul 26, 2023 Full Review Tina Kakadelis Beyond the Cinerama Dome The film’s neat, sleek facade takes away the passion and sadly comes off as calculated, contained, and lacking in grandeur. A technical marvel and acting showcase, The Tragedy of Macbeth adds nothing new to this famous tale. Rated: 3/4 Jul 25, 2023 Full Review Kent M. Wilhelm Tilt Magazine In The Tragedy of Macbeth, Coen's expertise allows him to paint a threatening world with an inspired and confident brush. Jul 24, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews
