I mean...Idris is in it. It can't be bad.

The plot was fun, a tiny bit predictable, but the action was good. Awesome to see Idris in an action role and Madden was pretty funny. There is a small part of me that wants a sequel, but I have a feeling that would be a mistake. LOL. The worst part of the movie is the name. It's original name was changed from Bastille Day ( due to the Bastille Day tragedy in July 2016). So when it was released "widely" in the US they renamed it the Take. Boo! The new name is too close to Takers (Idris movie) and there are older movies with the same title. They would have been better off calling it "Elba: Bond Audition Reel". My point? Idris proves he's got the moves to carry an action movie. It just needs to be properly marketed, and for goodness sake put a little thought into a title. Otherwise, totally worth me buying the movie to stream from Amazon. (This movie never played in the theater close to where I live)

An action packed kick-a** film taking place in Paris France. Mr. Elba portrays a CIA undercover operative who suffers no fool and gets the job done. Sometimes to his career's detriment. Following a bombing everyone is searching for the young American Expatriate thief who is an unwitting accomplice. From car chases to running the rooftops of Parisian tenements the performance by Mr. Elba once again proves that there isn't a character he cannot portray!
My only issue was the timing of a real life bombing in Paris pushed this to be released much later than expected and the last minute title change. Kudos to the executives for showing compassion for the victims and the survivors of a heinous terrorist plot.

This was okay. The first time I saw the previews I believe it was called Bastille Day??? Could be wrong. All in all there nothing really special about this film. Has some action, less than I would have liked and nothing on the level of Jason Bourne. I'm glad I didn't go to the movies for it. The acting is good, the plot interesting but it kind of drags a bit. Also there's no real connection between the main characters. High stakes bring on high emotions yes, but, I don't think it necessarily makes you besties? Also the main character (not Idris) wasn't American but playing an American? Which usually I could care less except his accent slipped in sometimes. Otherwise, I wouldn't have noticed. Kind of distracting. It was just OK for me. I was kind of disappointed I paid $5.

I enjoyed "The Take"/"Bastille Day". Idris Elba delivers a solid performance as always, and Richard Madden, aka Robb Stark from HBO's hit series Game of Thones, plays nicely off of Elba. An unlikely pairing, but it worked. Good action sequences. I liked that Idris Elba didn't always "win" despite him being the main character. Fairly predictable plot but with a Die Hard-esque twist.

It's unfortunate that Madden's feature debut post Game of Thrones was overshadowed by real world events. It's an entertaining film that's worth renting on a lazy weekend.

Als er eines Tages die falsche Tasche stiehlt, befindet er sich plötzlich mitten in den Ermittlungen rund um einen Terroranschlag, bei dem vier Menschen ums Leben gekommen sind. Der CIA-Agent Sean Briar wird auf seine Spur angesetzt, um ihn in die USA zu überführen. Aber Mason ist nicht nur unschuldig, er ist auch der Einzige, der die Spur zu den Attentätern zurückverfolgen kann. Gemeinsam decken Briar und Mason eine Verschwörung auf, deren Verwicklungen bis in Regierungskreise zu reichen scheinen. Ein Wettlauf mit der Zeit beginnt für die beiden, müssen sie doch die Drahtzieher hinter dem Anschlag finden und gleichzeitig vor den Behörden fliehen.

Der Film Bastille Day von James Watkins hatte im Sommer 2015 einen denkbar schlechten Starttermin in Frankreich. Reale Ereignisse zwangen dem Actionthriller einen politischen Kontext auf, der in dieser Form sicher niemals intendiert war. Ein Terroranschlag im Herzen von Paris? Maximale Sicherheitsstufen bei allen Behörden? Schwer bewaffnete Sicherheitskräfte auf den Strassen? Leider kam das vielen nur allzu bekannt vor. Das der Film letztlich überhaupt keinen terroristischen Hintergrund hat, spielte offenbar keine Rolle bei der Entscheidung, den Kinostart nach hinten zu verlegen, sämtliche Werbemaßnahmen einzustellen und letztlich dann doch den Film nach wenigen Tagen wieder aus den Kinos zu nehmen. Dabei wird es Bastille Day nun wirklich nicht gerecht, ihn lediglich auf diesen Aspekt zu reduzieren, der zudem niemals im Sinne seiner Macher war, und auch unmoralisches Kalkül lässt sich nicht unterstellen, war das Skript doch lange fertig, bevor es von der bedauerlichen Realität eingeholt wurde. Bastille Day ist ein schnörkellos und geradlinig erzählter Actionthriller, der in seiner Inszenierung erfrischend altmodisch daherkommt und von der ersten Minute an aufs Gaspedal drückt. In hohem Tempo hetzt Watkins seine beiden Protagonisten von Schauplatz zu Schauplatz und versteht es dabei, Paris als Setting gelungen in Szene zu setzen. Der Film hält sich nie zu lange an einem Ort auf, lässt seine Figuren ständig in Bewegung bleiben und dank der mit knapp 90 Minuten überschaubaren Laufzeit ist alles, was passiert auch immer relevant für die Handlung und ins leere führende Nebenschauplätze gibt es nicht. Auf der Handlungsebene darf man zwar keine Innovationen erwarten und Bastille Day kann seinem Genre sicher keine neuen Impulse verleihen, aber das Drehbuch gibt sich immerhin so wendungsreich, dass der Zuschauer mühelos bei der Stange gehalten wird. Zudem ist die Action ganz hervorragend in Szene gesetzt und mehr auf druckvolle Nahkämpfe und den einen oder anderen Shootout ausgerichtet, große Explosionen sucht man hier vergeblich. Ein früher Höhepunkt ist zweifellos die Verfolgungsjagd zwischen Briar und Mason über den Dächern von Paris. Idris Elba ist in top Form, verkörpert den wortkargen wie schlagkräftigen CIA-Agenten ganz hervorragend und spendiert dem Film eine enorme körperliche Präsenz. Richard Madden dagegen, den meisten wohl als Robb Stark in der Serie Game of Thrones bekannt, spielt seinen Michael Mason ähnlich glaubwürdig charmant wie verschlagen mit einem Hauch von Überheblichkeit. Auch die Chemie zwischen den beiden stimmt vollkommen und das Potential der Reibung zwischen dem trickreichen Taschendieb und dem knallharten Agenten wird gelungen ausgenutzt, ohne das der Film jemals Gefahr läuft in komödiantische Gefilde abzudriften.

Bastille Day ist ein gelungener und unterhaltsamer Actionthriller, der zwar keine Innovationspreise wird gewinnen können, aber vor allem durch seine erfrischend geradlinige Erzählstruktur und herrlich altmodisch inszenierte Action zu glänzen weiß. Ein hervorragend aufgelegtes Protagonisten-Duo rundet diese Schnitzeljagd quer durch Paris dann letztlich wunderbar ab, welche klassische Motive des Agententhrillers mit der visuellen Wucht des modernen Actionkinos kombiniert.
