Inside Out star Amy Poehler is hoping for many more sequels in the Disney and Pixar franchise following the release of this year’s Inside Out 2. Discussing her idea for the series going forward, Poehler revealed to Empire that she thinks an Inside Out follow-up could be released every few years, following main character Riley as a young mother and at middle-age.

"I just think that they should make these films like Seven Up, every couple of years in Riley's life. A young adult, a young mother, and I think a middle-aged person. Everyone's having these very distinct new emotions that are showing up all the time."

Taking inspiration from the 1964 documentary film series Seven Up, which follows the lives of ten males and four females in England at various stages of their lives, Poehler’s idea for the Inside Out series could follow the audience throughout their lives and potentially lead to something quite profound. Even among Pixar’s already acclaimed catalog.

Inside Out 2's Kelsey Mann left out an emotion because 'it was not fun to watch.'

This year’s first Inside Out sequel could certainly start the trend, with Inside Out 2 coming nearly a decade after the first movie. Expectations are understandably high, with Poehler feeling that the first outing remains the best movie she’s ever been in. But, even with such pressure, she refuses to let fear stop her from trying to top it.

"It was super-emotional, and I felt so proud to be in it. I still maintain it's probably the best film I've ever been in...This is where Joy and I dovetail. You can't let that fear stop you from action. You have to act."

Directed by Kelsey Mann and produced by Mark Nielsen, Inside Out 2 finds everything changing for Riley and the little voices inside her head. You can check out the official synopsis for the Disney and Pixar sequel below.

“Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” returns to the mind of newly minted teenager Riley just as headquarters is undergoing a sudden demolition to make room for something entirely unexpected: new Emotions! Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust, who’ve long been running a successful operation by all accounts, aren’t sure how to feel when Anxiety shows up. And it looks like she’s not alone.”

The sequel will add several new voices to the roster, including Anxiety, with director Kelsey Mann teasing how the new character will stir things up within headquarters.

“Anxiety, voiced by Maya Hawke, might be new to the crew, but she’s not really the type to take a back seat. That makes a lot of sense if you think about it in terms of what goes on inside all our minds.”

Maya Hawke lends her voice to Anxiety, alongside Amy Poehler as Joy, Phyllis Smith as Sadness, Lewis Black as Anger, Tony Hale as Fear, and Liza Lapira as Disgust. Inside Out 2 releases only in theaters on June 14, 2024.
