Reseña del editor
An intimate, funny and surprising behind-the-scenes look at VOGUE’S legendary editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and her team of larger-than- life editors, this is the captivating story of how they create the must-have bible of fashion: THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE. At the eye of this annual fashion hurricane is the two-decade relationship between Anna and Grace Coddington, incomparable creative director and fashion genius. Through them, we see close-up the delicate creative chemistry it takes to remain at the top of the fashion field. Now, with the biggest issue ever hanging in the balance, Anna and Grace confront the runways of Fashion Week, the back rooms of the world’s biggest designers, the high-stakes photo shoots – and each other – as the VOGUE team scrambles to find the perfect look for each page. Director R.J. Cutler delivers this riveting look into the world of fashion that is as fun, fabulous and fast-paced as the world it captures.

Fashionistas finally get a glimpse of the mastermind behind the lion's share of the American fashion industry, Anna Wintour, editor of Vogue, in the dishy documentary The September Issue. The title refers to the fattest monthly edition of the fashion bible, and the sheer creative and financial efforts it takes to stage and publish it--not unlike a full feature film pressed inside glossy printed pages.Wintour, often thought to be the inspiration for the Meryl Streep character in The Devil Wears Prada, is revealed by director R.J. Cutler (producer of The War Room) to be both more open and human than her carefully cultivated persona, but still guarded and tough to read. There's less focus on any possible megalomania on the part of Wintour--perhaps that's implied--and more on just what an endeavor it is to produce that issue of Vogue, its impact on the fashion world, and what kind of critter could work on such a narrow playing field, yet have her impact realized on such a vast scale.
The September Issue shows the battle of wills that goes on behind the scenes of every aspect of fashion publishing--and sometimes it's not pretty. The ruthless Wintour, at Vogue for two decades, has an equally strong-minded inner circle, including most notably Vogue's creative director, Grace Coddington, a former model (like Wintour herself) who clashes often, and colorfully, with her frenemy and longtime colleague Wintour. The political maneuvering can seem exhausting to the viewer, but the dishy reality is just too delicious. "Fashion is not about looking back," says Wintour. "It's about looking forward." And as with the best documentaries about fashion, including Unzipped and Lagerfeld Confidential, The September Issue leaves the viewer with a renewed appreciation for the beauty, creativity and energy behind fashion--even if one is watching, happily, in jeans and a T-shirt. --A.T. The magazine is built, literally photo by photo, on photo "boards." As editor, Wintour must keep the whole issue in mind, balancing stories, developing themes, and instructing the stylists who go out on shoots. In addition, with the help of her editors, Wintour must keep her eye out for new designers and fashion trends. It's a multi-billion dollar business, reflected in a few hundred pages of editorial work and advertisements. Yet at the same time, fashion is sociology, psychology and art. The editor knows this, which is why she excels at her job.
Many reviewers have commented that "human" side of Wintour comes through in this documentary. Yet, disappointed assistants aside (and you know what -- it was one of the best jobs in the world -- what was her problem?), I've always believed that Wintour's demeanor and attitudes are no more harsh than that of any top executive running a successful, mega-dollar corporation. In that respect, fashion is no different than auto production; the executive has to wear many hats and always consider the bottom line. Wintour is running the top fashion magazine in the world; she'd be an idiot (which she surely is not) if she did not strategize and play tough.
The big surprise in the film, however, and the Vogue editor who steals the show is, of course, Grace Coddington. I have to say that I had never heard of Grace. Yet I see that, if Wintour is the heart of Vogue, Coddington is the soul. I agree with Wintour; Grace is a genius. She comes across as a true artist: sensitive, warm, open, testy and rude at times, angry when her vision is not appreciated; yet endlessly creative and very beautiful. I loved her untamed red hair, long black dresses or pants, and sandals. While I'd expected that Cutler's film would be fun and and informative, Grace was a treasure that I hadn't anticipated.
So I've now ordered the DVD (but from B&N, not Amazon -- I wanted the extra DVD). This documentary is a keeper.
The September Issue helped me gage the world of fashion and realize that it is more than a parade of eccentric, superficial people who have nothing better to do with their time. Now I realize the Anna Wintour world of fashion is a celebration of art and glamour through clothing. Each set of pictures is meant to transform you to a different world and experience different emotions. I loved watching the evolution of Grace Coddington. In the beginning, I thought she was an overemotional crazy lady with too much attachment to a few measly pictures. Then as I watch the movie, I realize that she is an artistic genius!!! It's amazing! She really is a genius!
Definitely watch the September Issue. Especially if you are a fashion skeptic like me. This movie will bring a new appreciation to the world of fashion and Vogue!
People worth knowing don't treat others like this. Leaders don't treat others like this. It is also interesting to watch this in a post-Epstein society. One must wonder how people that are this high ranking in this highly dysfunctional world of fashion are connected to the scum of high society like Epstein as well.
So, a good documentary and filming style, and quite informative, but I'll pass. People like Anna are on their way out, I hope, as kindness is becoming a more acceptable model of leadership. Power doesn't always have to equal an ego-trip, and I'd love to see more films about people who are getting it right.

We accompany Wintour to the shows, where she is treated like an icon, but we get to see more of her personality when she visits the fashion designers. I thought she was pretty icy with the Yves Saint Laurent designer, who comes off as a bit flaky - he's not ready with everything, he does not seem secure, he is not showing colour this season - and Wintour is visibly impatient with this, as someone in her position probably should be. Contrast with the meeting with Karl Lagerfeld who appears to be ready to show her things, he is personable with her, she is accompanied by her daughter, who always seems to have a softening effect on her whenever she appears. Wintour is clearly defensive about her career choice, even though she is so influential in her milieu, we get the idea that her family sees her job as trivial. This is a chip on her shoulder. She appears to be very displicined, very decisive. She does not come off as being as tyrannical as the character in The Devil Wears Prada, but her decisiveness and directness will have people saying that she is icy. However, to have that job means making fast, tough choices. She appears to have a good team to count on, but you rarely get the feeling of her generating team spirit within her group - watching Coddington and Wintour wait for an elevator, the silence is awkward. They seem to respect each other, but do they like each other? We get to watch a photo shoot in Rome with Sienna Miller by Maria Testino - even a photographer of his calibre gets the gears from Wintour, asking `is that it', `where are the clothes'. We are let inside a retailers breakfast where Vogue is being asked by a top fashion retailer to use their clout to get designers to deliver on time, because it is hurting their business - you can see how important they feel Vogue's influence is. It is a great view inside the world of fashion, no question - entertaining, lots of flash, lots of back room drama. Highly recommended.
