10 Dog Movies to Watch for National Puppy Day

It's the cutest day of the year, National Puppy Day! To celebrate, I thought I'd showcase some heartwarming movies about our favorite furry companions. From tales of loyalty and friendship to adventures that will make you laugh and cry, there is something for everyone on this list... except maybe cats. (Actually, there's one cats might like too.) So grab some popcorn, cuddle up with your own pup if you have one, and get ready for a movie night that celebrates man's best friend.

Dog

Come for Channing Tatum, stay for the touching road trip of a man and dog who both reckon with their military service. It’s co-directed by the star and dedicated to the memory of his late dog Lulu. Rent it at the Kiosk today!

The Call of the Wild

Available to rent at the Kiosk, Harrison Ford stars in the adaptation of the classic 1903 novel. Buck is one of the most iconic fictional dogs of all time, so it’s fitting that he’s brought to life alongside one of the biggest action stars.

Clifford the Big Red Dog

After years of children’s books, a TV series, and an animated film, a live-action version of Clifford finally arrived in 2021. Kids will love the adventures of Emily Elizabeth and the titular big red dog while the parents can enjoy performances from comedic actors like Tony Hale, John Cleese, and Keenan Thompson. Find this classic at the Kiosk!

The Secret Life of Pets

This animated hit throws a bone to cats and other pets, but dogs are still undoubtedly the stars of the movie. Like Toy Story for pets, the comedy will have kids laughing while ultimately showing them the importance of teamwork. Rent at the Kiosk now!

101 Dalmatians

If you’re looking for a movie with puppies, no film has more than 101 Dalmatians, whether the animated original or the live-action version starring Glenn Close as Cruella Deville. Watch the spotted pups do their best to avoid her clutches and think twice about wearing fur!

Isle of Dogs

For the more serious cinephiles, there’s Wes Anderson’s star-studded stop-motion animated film. In 2038 Japan, there is a canine flu that leads to all the country’s dogs being quarantined on an island. After six months, 12-year-old Atari escapes to the island to reunite with his dog, Spots.

Shiloh

Based on a beloved children’s book, this 1996 family film follows a young boy who works hard to rescue a beagle puppy from his abusive owner. He wrestles with the morality of having stolen Shiloh versus letting the innocent animal suffer at the hands of his legal owner.

My Dog Skip

A young Frankie Muniz stars in a 1940s period piece based on a memoir about how a man’s life was changed by the gift of a Smooth Fox Terrier. Also starring Diane Lane, Luke Wilson, Kevin Bacon, and with narration by Harry Connick Jr., the movie follows the lonely only child starting to make friends with the help of his new pup.

Air bud

It would be a crime against my fellow millennials if I didn’t include the first of the Air Bud franchise on this list. I think all that needs to be said is this: “Ain’t no rule that says a dog can’t play basketball.”

Strays

Once the kids go to bed, it’s time to have fun with the raunchy live-action comedy with Will Ferrell and Jamie Foxx as the voices of the lead dogs. After being ditched by an owner, a Border Terrier meets a stray Boston Terrier and learns the ways of the street.
