in the book evil johnny’s whole reasoning for wanting to swap with normal john is so that he can go to normal john’s flat and be left alone long enough to take a nap and that is very relatable to me personally
The good thing about this is that it's ENTIRELY Matthew Rhys and well, I like Matthew Rhys. Also, it really dives headfirst into my favorite doppelganger trope: inhabiting someone else's life! It never quite goes as dark as I want—surely du Maurier's novel has more bite—but if films were cigarettes, this style of British drama would be my brand.
Ok so I’m just expected to believe that these genetically unrelated guys are identical down to their very penises?
Brave to put this in the ‘thriller’ category as I must say I wasn’t particularly thrilled.
The perfect kind of film for a rainy Sunday afternoon. Very forgettable but enjoyable and heartwarming. Also COMPLETELY implausible but not really an issue as far as I’m concerned. Matthew Rhys is perfect in this role 👌🏼
Took a random punt on this - and it drew me in completely…
…a cracking yarn elevated above its televisual roots by an excellent home-grown cast all on top form - Rhys, Scott, Atkins, Orr-Ewing - all exuding various facets of post-war Englishness among a seriously landed setting…
…much of the narrative intrigue is down to Du Maurier’s twisty source, of course, and this version cleverly plays up the visual potential of the double - though I’ve knocked off its 4th star as the end rather disappointingly drips into jingoistic sentimentality that undoes some of its edge.
(Now need to read the novel and seek out the earlier film with Alec Guinness…)
A nice little mystery about mistaken identity or rather how identity can change when give the chance. Nothing much but just enough. Well played and pleasing.
Watch to find out why Mrs Simpson died.
